Default Reselling blu-rays without cases/inserts: Worth what?

Maybe there is no point in collecting blu-rays if I'm getting rid of most of the cases/inserts. Not only that, when I want to watch a blu-ray, I find it actually more of a hassle grabbing the binder from the shelf, taking disc out of the binder and putting the disc back in the binder when I'm done watching it than grabbing the case from the shelf, taking out a disc from a case and putting it back in the case when I'm done watching the blu-ray. It also does not seem right getting rid of the cases/inserts and just keeping the discs. I have got rid of most of my blu-ray cases and inserts so I can save space. Suppose I have about 110 blu-rays stored per a disc binder. I'm not counting the bonus discs or DVDs that came packaged with the blu-rays as I won't charge extra for those. If I can get (110 x $4)+ $10 for Case Logic 136-disc capacity binder. That would equal $450. Does $450 + free shipping sound fair for the disc binder with the blu-rays? Will I get more like $75 shipped instead of $450 shipped?

I'd recommend breaking the collection up into smaller chunks if you want $4 per disc. $450 is serious collector money and serious collectors don't tend to buy BDs without cases. (At least in my experience)

I was going to say the same thing. I have been tempted by bulk disc collections like this but usually there are too many I already own/don't want. Breaking them up would make reselling more likely.

If I do it that way, it will take me months to sell my blu-rays, many trips to the post office, buying shipping materials constantly, and it will seem like a job. It would be like working in a job that required you in order to get paid you would have to give up your blu-rays (giving up something you own to get paid in equal value more or less). Even if I had all the cases/inserts I still would not sell them in small chucks in Ebay/Craig's List and would just go to the pawn shop in a couple of trips. My time is worth something as well.

Probably would be able to sale your collection faster separately. Or maybe pick four for a price deal.

You came here for advice and we gave it to you. Sorry if you don't like it.

I think it's possible somebody could buy the whole binder-load, but I do think you'd find better luck selling them in smaller lots. Not necessarily individually (which would be ungodly unless you have some really rare ones in the mix), but maybe splitting them up by genres, or simply halving or splitting it into quarters.

Buying 100 or so cases would be pretty expensive--plastic or paper envelopes or binder sheets would be cheaper. If you go that route, I'd be concerned about whether they'll survive shipping--they'd have to be packed really really well.

I personally can't fathom selling movies without cases/inserts/artwork, I assume nobody would buy them. Just today, I dropped off about 10 movies I had no artwork for donation (stuff I doubled-up on from different editions, spare DVD copies, stuff I'd never expect anybody to pay for on an individual basis). Of course, with the amount you have, it would be unthinkable to donate those, but I'd keep my expectations low. Whether all at once or in smaller chunks, it probably will take months to sell, but you may find better luck offering the option: buy them all, buy 50, buy 25, buy 10, 5, 1, etc.

I doubt you can get $4 per disc for very many titles. I regularly sell titles for $2 a pop with cases/covers and they usually go pretty fast but so.etimes a few I have to mark down to $1 or even $0.01 in some cases to just be rid of them

I'm the last person to advocate it, but you sound like you should have started a digital collection if the cases were too much drama.

Also, to echo what everyone else said, you're better off keeping them or giving to a friend. Home video is not a ROI friendly market.

I did start a digital collection on Vudu and iTunes a few years ago. I was strictly digital about 1 year ago and favored digital over blu-ray for around 3 months primarily because of space issues and built up my Vudu library to around 320 movies. I went back to strictly blu-ray about 9 months ago with the intent to just buy binders to save space and I prefer the quality of blu-ray.

Second hand stores often sell blurays (with packaging) for $5 and sometimes even down to $2 or $3 depending on sales.

$4 a bluray is a bit much of an ask with no cover. If it was Criterion or collectible/horror/niche title, then that would be fair.

I've really flipped sides on the value of cases, especially paying extra for steelbooks and such, but I couldn't imagine sliding my precious discs into sleeves. I dunno how it never bothered me with CD's in my youth.

I did not plan on reselling them when I was getting rid of the cases and cover art because I did resell 100's of blu-rays in the past and regretted it for many of them. By getting rid of the cases and cover art it makes it less tempting for me to resell my blu-rays. There is no way I'm going to buy blu-ray cases so I can have an easier time reselling my blu-rays (if I choose to resell them), especially since I would still be missing the cover art and the sale ends up being not much more than the money spent on a blu-ray case. I have just over 300 blu-rays, maybe around 250 that I don't have the cases or cover art for, and I still have the boxes for some of my boxed sets. So around 250, if I tried to resell them, would not include the case and cover art.

If you did not plan to re-sell them before and you got rid of the cases to discourage you from doing so, then why are you selling them now?

I'd imagine you'd have a hard time trying to sell them. Most people nowadays that buy physical media do it to collect and while most collectors don't mind buying used, you're going to have a hard time selling these because not too many people are going to want to buy just a disk. And the people that aren't collectors usually stream media or have downloaded content and don't care much for the actual copies.

This is my experience. I recently took a box of BDs I no longer wanted in to a local bookstore to sell. Any titles with case damage, they told me they couldn't use. The people still buying physical media would seem to want the packages too.

Good luck!

Just put them on eBay as a bulk listing all the titles and how much you want for them to gauge if you will have offers. You may also decide to sell them by genre or studio company like they have with the Warner Bros. box sets, etc.

Yeah it's been hard for me trying to sell Blu-Rays that have the case and all for a decent price, I sold a lot of 17 movies for $26, I paid at least $60 total for them.

What about donating them to Goodwill and using it as a tax write-off? Problem is I don't know what the value would be without the cases and cover art. Would $4 per blu-ray be about right?

I've done this in the past but for it to be worthwhile you need to have enough in tax deductions to go beyond the standard deduction. If you don't, then that won't benefit you either. In my mind listing them here on this site priced around $4 each with the disclaimer that buyers must purchase $20+ worth per sale is likely you're best bet. Placing all discs in a zip lock baggy sandwiched between 2 pieces of cardboard inside a standard padded envelope would keep things safe and keep shipping costs to around $2 - $3 per sale. Of course you'll still need shipping envelopes (I always save mine whenever I order something so that I can re-use them). Either way, depending on the titles you may find that you can move a bunch in a few transactions here on site and still come close to what you want for them. Do you have a list of what you're looking to move? It might help give us a better idea of how to break things up.

Edit: I also might be interested in purchasing some depending on what you have, as the lack of case/art doesn't always bother me.
