Default Can't Play Criterion

My Pioneer Elite BDP-23FD has stopped playing Criterion discs. I get "can't play disc", "unknowndisc" even on ones that previously played. It seems to be Criterion only as other discs have played fine. Anyone else have this problem? And if so, what do I do about it?

I tried 4 titles, 2 I had previously played, 2 were brand-new. I's sure I could try everyone in my collection but I doubt I'd get different results Firmware is up to date.

That model was released in 2009 so it is an older one (7 years).

Short story My last player that was a Samsung was about 6 years old when it started doing the same thing to many of the titles I had watched many times. Even the latest firmware was installed.

It's likely Player related, but there is an assortment of Criterion Discs that were affected by poor manufacturing and failed with age. It's possible that you own some of these titles and that's why they won't play now. An exchange program was set up for owners of said discs. There's a thread in the North american Forum all about it as several Criterion titles were affected.

Where is the thread? I couldn't find it. Anyway, I have never heard of blu-rays going bad with age (especially as 1 of the titles I tried was still sealed). Also there is no mention of that on Criterion's website.

Here's the thread.. brace yourself, it's quite the lengthy list.

I've taken the Criterion info out of the OP since it appears that iceman wants a Master Thread of Defective Discs.

I'm reposting the info here and will link to it in the OP.

--------------------------------------------------

Credit to Deep, Brent L., Partyslammer, and many others for their information.

The affected date range is approx April 2009 to May 2010. Some are bronzing. Some are peeling.

According to the alphanumeric codes on the discs, it appears that most of the bad discs were manufactured by Sonopress (aka Arvato Digital Services). Look for IFPI Mould codes 10K6 or 10K7. If you don't see those codes, look for IFPI codes starting with L0** or LB**.

The discs become unplayable at different times. Some won't load at all. Some will load the main menu but nothing else. If a movie plays, it may fail anytime between 45 and 75 minutes (at the layer change). Specifically with Stagecoach, the movie might be problem-free, but the Bucking Broadway special feature skips or freezes.

10/01 update from Brent L. (Criterion is aware of the issue. They need to handle Eraserhead first before handling previous releases.): https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=408

10/03 update from No Name (Criterion has acknowledged seven movies that can fall prey to bronzing.): https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=758

None of the discs I tried are on that list. The only discs I have that are on that list are Repulsion and 8 1/2 and they both played fine before this started. I played Blue is the Warmest Color which is 3 hrs. long. After 2 hrs. I was interrupted so I turned the player off with the disc inside ( as I do quite regularly). When I turned the player back on, it would not read the disc which already played that same day and since then, no Criterion has played

Time for a new BD player I'd say

Yep, I'd sadly agree with crazyBLUE on this one. I wouldn't completely toss out the old player, but it's sounding like a new one may be the fix. A few other things I would try however...

1) Power Cycle the unit. Remove any discs, shut it all the way down so that it's completely off (not standby), unplug the cord from the wall (and unit if possible) and wait 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in and see what happens.

2) Try clearing the BD Cache if possible. Perhaps some previously stored data is corrupted and causing the problem.

In addition to resetting and clearing the cache, you should run one of these before investing on a new player:

https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Innov...y+lens+cleaner

I ran into the same problem a few years ago with my old Sony player, and this took care of that.

How do you clear the cache?

Not sure exactly as it can differe between brands and players and I don't have a Pioneer, but you can look for an "Erase application data" or "Format storage" or something like that on the Initial settings screen to start with. In all likelihood it won't do much for you, but it is worth trying before you scrap the player.

What brand is the player? If you see the Philistine logo that probably explains it.

It was an (admittedly poor) attempt at humor.
