Default 1080p or 720p??

Heres my problem... LG sent me a exchange letter for a new tv. Now, my choices are between a 50' plasma 720p 15,000 to 1 contrast, or a 47 1080p lcd 10,000 to 1 contrast. Is this a no brainer should i sacrifice the 3 inches for the 1080p???? Any help is greatly appreiciated!

Default Plasma is still better in a lot of ways

what you lose in pixels you gain in other areas, it really is a tough choice. I may be biased since we just bought a 50" Sammy Plasma 720p for our second tv but then again, I may not. Check the link:

Picture will look much better on the 1080p. 50" is too big for 720p imo.

Default More important factors to consider over native resolution!

The popular selling factor these days is 1080p and while I would have it on my list of desired features it is absolutely not the most important factor. It is proven that the difference between 720p, 1080i, and 1080p from a normal viewing distance (with everything else being equal) is really undetectable. You do need to be more conserend with things like contrast ratio.

I have a 61'' Pioneer Elite plasma that is 720p/1080i and my BD's look beautiful on it!! So naturally you know were I'm going with this...In your case, I would go for the 50'' 720p plasma (size really does matter, even 3 more inches) I also favor plasma over LCD...they both a great...it's just that plasma still looks better to me no matter what the no brained sales people will tell you in the retail stores.

Agreed that most people can't tell the difference between 720p, 1080i, and 1080p at normal viewing distance, but I would go for the 1080p set because it won't be long that all sets sold are 1080p and why not have the capability of playing a Blu-Ray disc to it's max potential.

Go for the 1080p.

As an electrical engineer with over 25 years of experience in hi-tech industry I can say with certainly that the preference of newer LCD technology over plasma doen't relegate the retail sales reps to being "no brained".

Its not just size to consider also.
The plasma might have a better picture because of the better black levels compared to the LCD.
The plasma will also consume much more power than the LCD.
How far do you sit from the set?
For example if you sit any farther than 6 feet from the 47" you won't be able to tell the difference from a 1080p picture or a 720p one.
For the 50 inch you could be as far as 17 feet and still see a good 720p image.

Actually you will be able to tell the difference. Put two sets side by side of the same size, feed them both 1080P, and watch the results. It's a myth that 1080P won't have an effect at longer distances - the downscaling on the 720P set alone takes care of that.

do some research about both models and see which one is going to give you the better overall picture. just because its 1080p doesn't automatically make it better

about 8 to 10 feet away. its a hard decision cause my last one was 50' plasma 720 p and my bds looked pretty damn good. but, 1080p is the future. also what about the contrast? 50' 720p has 15,000 to1 the lcd 1080p is 10,000 to 1. is that going to be a big difference?

Go for the 1080p LCD. You'll have no regrets that your resolution could've been higher.
