God’s Not Dead 2 Blu-ray (brief user review)

This God’s Not Dead 2 movie is a low budget Christian movie from Pure Flix Entertainment. Pure Flix Entertainment has a business relationship with Universal Studios. Therefore, this Blu-ray was created and distributed by Universal Studios. While I enjoyed this sequel, I liked the original God’s Not Dead storyline better. Many of the same characters from the original movie are also in the sequel along with new characters. It is difficult to make a successful sequel, and Pure Flix Entertainment pulled it off. The very first God’s Not Dead movie had a budget of 2 million dollars, however box office sells were over 62.6 million since the Christian community loved the first movie. The sequel God’s Not Dead 2 had a bigger estimated budget of 5 million dollars and box office sells were over $20 million dollars. Still profitable but not as successful as the original. The sequel has an interesting scene after the end credits which suggests a possible God’s Not Dead 3 movie could be released in the future. Therefore, we are looking at a possible trilogy (I am guessing Pure Flix Entertainment might stop after three movies). The God’s Not Dead movie series is fictional; however all the movies are similar to some real life persecutions that Christians have experienced in the modern 21st Century. In fact during the end credits each movie has a long list of real life court cases that have occurred in history where Christians have needed to defend their faith.

In God’s Not Dead 2 it was very interesting to watch a Christian teacher defend herself in court for answering a students question about Jesus Christ from a historical point of view. Those that enjoyed the original God’s Not Dead movie will also most likely enjoy the sequel. This movie has a very strong Gospel message with Jesus Christ shown as more than a historical person. The movie is not ashamed to share the message that Jesus Christ is God and the risen personal savior for the world.

Blu-ray and DVD optical disc comments

The Blu-ray format is slightly over 10 years old, and some secular and Christian studios are still releasing movies on Blu-ray/DVD combo packs. The purpose of a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack is that it allows families to play the lower quality 480i DVD version of the movie in every room, since some families have not upgraded all their DVD players to Blu-ray players yet. For those families that have 100% Blu-ray players there is no reason to even use the 480i DVD disc, since the exact same movie with all the bonus features also exists on the 1080P Blu-ray disc. The God’s Not Dead 2 480i dual layer DVD disc uses a total of 7.03GB out of 8.5GB. The God’s Not Dead 2 dual layer Blu-ray disc uses a total of 44.1GB out of 50GB.

Video quality

The video quality for this Pure Flix Entertainment/Universal Studios release was outstanding. The average MPEG-4/AVC bit rate appeared to be around 35+ Mbps and most scenes were in the 36-37Mbps range which is excellent high bit rate encode. The picture quality is reference quality. Pure Flix Entertainment used Arri Alexa and Red Epic digital cameras to create this movie. Many scenes in the movie have deep black levels with excellent resolution detail. I had no complaints about this movie which is true reference quality when compared to some other Christian movies on Blu-ray. This movie is also encoded with English SDH and Spanish subtitles.
Audio quality

God’s Not Dead 2 also has a reference quality 5.1 lossless English soundtrack. This is the very first time in history that Pure Flix Entertainment has ported over the 5.1 PCM studio master. Once the Blu-ray player or A/V receiver unzips the lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master soundtrack, fans of this movie will experience 5.1 PCM that is bit for bit exactly the same as the studio master.

I found the audio mix to be beautiful with easy to understand dialogue coming out of mainly the center channel. Left and right surround sound speakers sounded good with subwoofer activity kicking in from time to time. Pure Flix Entertainment and Universal Studios have created an excellent soundtrack that Christians and non-Christians will enjoy. There is also a lossy Spanish 5.1 DTS soundtrack at 768kbps for the Spanish Christian community. For the visually impaired there is a lossy English 2.0 Dolby Digital soundtrack at 192kbps.

Bonus Features

I enjoyed the Bonus Features on the God’s Not Dead 2 Blu-ray. My only complaint is that no audio commentary track was created for this movie. Pure Flix Entertainment appears to be moving away from audio commentaries on some of their more recent Blu-ray releases. It takes time and it costs more money to create an audio commentary track. The main title screen is 1080P using the MPEG-4/AVC codec, with 2.0 Dolby Digital (224kbps). All the extra features for the God’s Not Dead Blu-ray uses 1080P resolution and MPEG-4/AVC codec. All of the trailers use 5.1 Dolby Digital (640kbps). All the rest of the extra features uses English 2.0 Dolby Digital (192kbps). The Deleted Scenes lasts a total of 17 minutes and 29 seconds. Man, Myth, Messiah, with Rice Broocks lasts a total of 3 minutes and 56 seconds. Between Heaven and Hollywood with David A.R. White lasts 2 minutes and 49 seconds. Visual Effects of God’s Not Dead 2 lasts 3 minutes and 41 seconds. Filming in Arkansas lasts a total of 3 minutes and 19 seconds. First Liberty lasts a total of 1 minute and 32 seconds. Trailers lasts a total of 18 minutes and 56 seconds.

Conclusion

God’s Not Dead 2 is a fictional Christian movie that was very enjoyable to watch. Some of the persecution of Christians in the movie is similar to persecution that some Christians have experienced in real life. This movie has a strong Gospel message and is very enjoyable among evangelical Christians. The bonus features were very enjoyable to watch even though no audio commentary track exists. The super high bit rate MPEG-4/AVC 1080P picture quality is reference material. The 5.1 lossless surround track is awesome and the first Pure Flix Entertainment movie to use 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio. For Christians and non-Christians that enjoyed the original God’s Not Dead movie, I highly recommend people purchase or rent the sequel on Blu-ray.
