That films sounds so last year.

Looks like a pretty crazy chiller, although the acting seemed a little off in a not-so-interntional way.

Saw this, and still am thinking about it 3 days later.

I saw this at 10pm on Tuesday night, and I won't lie, I was pretty tired. Took some long blinks and missed a few lines of subtitles here and there. I really want to check it out again in the near future.

So, first and foremost, is this a horror film? Yes and no. On the surface, it's a simple family drama. It takes place over the course of a few days, during a wedding in a small, old-timey Polish town. A London man is moving there to marry his Polish girlfriend, meeting her parents for the first time. You see the day he arrives, as he meets his future father-in-law, starts doing some cleaning and light work around the house, and then falls asleep. The next day is the wedding, and things really start to ramp up during the reception.

Under it's surface, it's very much a horror story. It's about a man that gets possessed by a spirit. I'm not even sure if the word "demon" is used during the film. (The technical term is dybbuk, which is the Polish equivalent for demon).

Very slowly paced, lots of dialogue, some good acting, WONDERFUL cinematography, and an enthralling score; this movie has a lot going on, drawing parallels to WWII, Judaism, and probably many other cultural things I wasn't able to pick up on during my first viewing.

I'd say if you enjoyed The Witch, and you go into this with realistic expectations (not a blood bath, not typical modern horror, very psychological), then you'll come out enjoying this film.

3.5/5 until I get a re-view.

Great review, jacobsever! Thanks for posting.

I picked up a vibe eerily similar to The Witch from the trailer, and that's what piqued my interest in the film. So, I'm looking even more forward to seeing it now!

I'd really like to see this in theatres. Nowhere near by seems to be playing it yet though. Did it recently show up at your theatre(s)? Maybe in the coming weeks I might get lucky.

Yup, it played this past week. I believe yesterday was the last showing for it. So many of the art/indie theaters in my area get films for 1 lonely week. So you either see it then, or you miss out.

I check my listings weekly and it never popped up. Probably was shown out in LA. Bummer. Hopefully it becomes accessible in the near future.

FYI, for those that didn't know, the director hung himself in a hotel room right before the film screened at a Polish film festival. Kinda weird timing.

Well this is depressing

Your review has me intrigued though, and I liked The Witch a lot so if it's similar in vibe I definitely wanna check it out whenever I get a chance

It's starting to pop up as VOD pre-orders at places like Itunes and Amazon Video. I think one of them listed the availability date as December 8th?
