The Stewardesses 3D Blu-ray

I didn't see this one coming. I thought Shout Factory still had the distribution rights. I saw it at the 3-D Film Expo 3 years ago, and it's one of the oddest films I've ever seen.

... supposedly it's the most financially successful 3-D film ever released (in relative terms), so successful in fact that an actual commercial airline was started with the profits.

As I understand it, 3-D Film Archive have had this one ready to go for a while now.

Dunno about the film, but I always thought the poster art was great.

This was restored in 2008 by the late "Mr 3-D" Daniel L. Symmes.

Shout had the license and released a bad anaglyphic conversion but had zero interest in a quality 3-D Blu-ray release. We've been patiently waiting for their license to expire.

I never got around to watching mine, if I recall they included two anaglyphic 3D versions, one in black and white and one in colour. Glad I can just put that onto ebay now, the 3D Film Archive saves the day again...

The 3-D Film Archive worked on this? That actually makes me more impressed.

And on the topic of "financially successful", I believe that Hollywood did not take notice and start to make 3-D films immediately afterwards was because this was a softcore adult film with a self applied X rating, and that it took 12 years and a different successful 3-D movie, Comin' at Ya!, to convince Hollywood that "Yeah, there might be something here, folks. Let's start making 3-D movies again".

The best thing we got from The Stewardesses' success was that StereoVision was able to get the rights from Warner Bros. to release a single strip version of House of Wax 3-D during the 70's, which Warners got the rights back and re-released it during the 80's 3-D film cycle.

It would appear that if the financial success of The Stewardesses had an impact, it led to more of the same, X-rated 3-D rather than mainstream Hollywood productions. Perhaps this association delegitimatized 3-D for about a decade or so?

In 2016, there's now so much 3-D out there that we really don't have to worry about a film like this ghettoizing 3-D. It's already mastered, it's ready to go, so this isn't sending other more deserving 3-D films to the back of the queue. Making it available only improves the representation of the scope of material that's been attempted in 3-D over the years, and this movie was clearly a significant part of that history. And because the master doesn't have to be created and financed for this release, it may be quicker to cover its costs and turn a profit which can enable other 3-D films to be tackled.

That's good that Shout did not release it on Blu-ray 3D. The 3D Film Archive would have fixed many of the 3D problems in Metalstorm and Amityville 3-D.

I've seen the anaglyph DVD. Actually, for an anaglyph DVD I was impressed. It was in both color anaglyph (yuck!) and black-and-white (which was much better). Of course this release will surely blow it away, but compared to other anaglyph releases (Friday the 13th part 3 comes to mind) this one wasn't half bad. At least on a PC or a properly-calibrated TV, the image had a good amount of depth and was pretty sharp for DVD.

I'm definitely picking this one up.

Just to be clear, this is a Daniel L. Symmes restoration from 2008, we (Greg Kintz and yours truly) did not work on it.

I guess they wouldn't have done a bad job if they used Daniel L. Symmes version.

Will all the extras that were on Shout DVD be included? If yes, will the 3D extras be in anaglyphic 3D?

Finally, a 3D disc truly worth adding to my collection.

(I eagerly await the rest of these kinds of 3D films on Blu-ray 3D, by the way. Get on it, lads.)

While you guys didn't work on it, I don't think we'll be disappointed in the quality of the 3d master/restoration work. We've all seen what Mr. Symmes can do in his work on "Inferno". Don't personally care for this film at all, and will probably never watch it, but I'll be buying it anyway. Got to support the whole "Old 3D" thing that's really starting to happen now.

Unless I'm thinking of another anaglyph DVD release like this, the Shout DVD had a nice amount of extras, some in anaglyph 3D (screen tests, etc.). If anyone owns that set it might be worth it to hold onto for the extras if they're not being ported over on the blu-ray.

My Maria told me I could buy The Stewardesses to support 3-D Blu-Ray... as long as I promise never to remove the shrinkwrap!

It's all good, though. The Stewardesses is not my cup of tea, in more ways than one. But I am glad it has been preserved and is available to those who insist.
