Question Weakest 3D films

For me, it's The BFG. Man, it was so flat and mild with no difference whatsoever. Kubo and the Two Strings was mild as well with the origami scenes looking decent. Independence Day: Resurgence was also a disappointment.

ID2?
I was disappointed with the 3D in Ratchet & Clank. Mostly mild 3D with some hints of strong 3D for one or two short shots. Very disappointing 3D. The movie was fun though, so I didn't regret seeing it.

BFG's 3D seemed medium with some mild, but no stronger than that, I'll agree.

Star Trek Beyond's 3D, is my single most disappointment for the 3D though. Mostly mild 3D throughout. A few medium 3D shots. I had high expectations so that was my fault, having Star Trek Into Darkness' 3D as the standard for Beyond.

Kubo looked like a good movie, though I skipped it due to the mild 3D previews.

Favorite 3D in theaters for 2016 so far:
TMNT 2 3D
Warcraft 3D
Wild Life 3D
Doctor Strange 3D

Ratchet and Clank. Nothing else comes close IMO.

Definitely Ratchet & Clank. Totally pointless and flat.

The Huntsman: Winter's War, Star Trek Beyond and Legend of Tarzan are the weakest of the bunch for me. Very disappointing. And I'm trying to remember the 3-D in Finding Dory, which isn't a good sign.

The year isn't over yet, but I'd say 2016 has been weaker than last year in terms of overall theatrical 3-D. Plenty of solid titles, few that really stand out. Of the films I've seen, the following have stuck in my memory (for 3-D only):

2016

Doctor Strange
Warcraft
Ghostbusters
TMNT 2
Robinson Crusoe

Almost made the list: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Suicide Squad

2015

Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
Star Wars: Force Awakens
Ant-Man
In the Heart of the Sea
Everest
The Walk
Terminator: Genisys

Almost made the list: Jurassic World, San Andreas

I felt that X-Men and Jungle Book were pretty.good (both shot in native 3D).

I'd class them both as decent. It's well past the point now where I honestly can't tell the difference between native 3-D and converted 3-D. The former is being used timidly while the latter has given us most of the best 3-D presentations of the past few years, IMO.

I still need to watch Star Trek Beyond on disc but I thought the 3D in Huntsman was better

80%, that's a nice number, but hopefully movie fans have a choice of 3D or 2D, since not everyone can see in 3D or can afford it.

It's a mild conversion that doesn't do 3D any favors, but it's there if you find it at the right price.

I have trouble with that also. Only time I'd avoid a certain blu ray 3D movie is if I didn't care for the movie and it had mild 3D, and then found it for a low price on 2D, which is very rare. Most times I'll buy the 3D version also if the movie is worth buying.

If it's a good movie with mild 3D, I'd still buy the 3D version, but really write to and request a stronger 3D experience from the creators for their next film (as I did with Ratchet & Clank 3D, who are working on Sly Cooper 3D next...).

I have the new Star Trek but have not watched it yet but will comment on this thread when I do so.
I enjoyed the medium to strong 3D in Resurgence too. I can imagine the project or seating angle for those against it may have played a role in a mild perception of the film's 3D.

I had to re-read Creed's reply post and then I saw he highlighted Huntman's Winter's War, but glad to see Creed confirmed he was referring to the movie's 3D, and not MercurySeven's post which is helpful.

My bad, Creed! I missed where you highlighted The Huntsman in your quote. I'll take care to read more closely in future, buddy. There are plenty of nasty users online these days, but you're clearly not one. On the contrary, I always enjoy reading your posts, and I hope you'll keep on keeping us up-to-date on all things 3-D!

^ I hope the 3D disc edition of X-Men: Apocalypse has a good reduced Black Friday price.
