Default Nearly entire Chapecoense soccer team believed dead in plane crash

Sad news. It appears that nearly the entire professional soccer team Chapecoense (Brazil) perished in a chartered plane crash Monday night. It's been reported that 75 are dead and only a handful of passengers survived. Seems only 3 players aboard survived and most, if not the entire team was on board. This team was having a terrific year too.

Yeah, I just read this on ESPN. That's quite terrible. I feel for everyone involved, from the organizations to the families of the victims as well as their fans. It's a sad day.

In a nice gesture the team they were supposed to face in the next round of the tournament has stated their desire for Chapecoense to be awarded the victory. Supposedly this was the team's best season ever.

Yeah, that's what I read too. They were such a small market team, that their home game had to played elsewhere about 300 miles away. Copa Sudamericana organizers deemed their 22000 capacity stadium to be unsuitable to host games. Interesting.

Anyway, that would be a great gesture to honor all these fallen players.

Truly a terrible story when "multiple serious trauma injuries" is the guy who got off luckiest.

One of them had their leg amputated. Could there be a worse way to survive for an athlete?

So sad.

We're always hearing about the ugly side of soccer fans but this brought out some of the best. As many as 100,000 fans of mostly the team they were supposed to play (Atletico Nacional) showed up at and around the stadium where the game was supposed to be held today to pay tribute to their fallen rivals.

There was one goalkeeper (42 and in his last season) from the team who stayed behind in Brazil and wasn't on the team flight. He was probably the luckiest. Of course I'm sure it'll still haunt him for the rest of his life.

REPORT: Ronaldinho, Riquelme for Chapecoense

Quote:
Reports are circulating that South American footballing legends Ronaldinho and Juan Roman Riquelme have offered their services to Chapecoense – for free.

The Brazilian side are in mourning after a plane crash en route to the Copa Sudamerica Final in Colombia wiped almost their entire team, with just three players surviving the crash.

Relief efforts have come in all shapes and sizes, from Paris Saint-Germain and Cristiano Ronaldo donating millions to the families, to clubs offering to loan their players to the club for free.

The latest gesture – albeit still unconfirmed – is that Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho and former Argentina international Riquelme have offered to play for Chapecoense in their time of need.

Ronaldinho (36) is currently without a club after being released by Fluminense, while Riquelme (38) retired two years ago.

The duo have a combined age of 74, but also share almost 150 international caps.
