UV codes worth more than physical disks?

I have Leon and The Fifth Element in the US pop art steelbooks and recently replaced the disks with the new releases. Along with these came UV codes valid only in the US.

I have no interest in these codes so decided to flog them on eBay (free listings for me at the moment so no risk), clearly marked as valid in the US only, starting at 99p.

Honestly, I did not expect them to raise anything much, but they just sold for a combined £12.50

So how is it that a UV code can go for more than a physical disk? Admiteddly I have not tried to sell the equivalent disks, but have been flogging a lot of stuff recently for a lot less than these babies fetched. What a strange world we live in

Apparently you can redeem the US codes elsewhere via VPNs etc so there is a market for them in the UK too.

If the title does not have any other UV codes listed for it it's "worth" more. I recently got Citizen Kane and The Shining in HMVs 2 for £25 and listed the UV codes for £5 each and they sold within an hour.

Also if you get a new release before release day expect to get around £6 for it. It certainly helps offset the cost of the discs.

Yeah they kept taking mine down for a while, so I listed them as flyers/leaflets (avoiding the word "code"), but they didn't sell as quickly (sometimes not at all). Seems they're not cracking down as much anymore - I sold the code for Labyrinth yesterday for £7!

Careful how you list them though - I accidentally listed Sicario as "Digital HD" and it was actually SD, so had to offer a partial refund (of 50%). I think that's just Lionsgate cheaping out though.

Also probably should've waited to see if that fancy Citizen Kane edition went into the offer (I got impatient and just bought the Amaray).

I had some listings a couple years ago where I was selling the DVD, digital copy and slipcover (keeping the blu and internal cover art) and they were taken down because they thought I was just selling a digital copy and that their policy was that you couldn't sell them. But then again, eBay employees aren't the brightest (I also had a Warner Archive MOD DVD taken down because I mentioned in the listing it was on a DVD-R). But I just checked eBay now and saw tons of codes being listed, so I guess you can sell them there after all.

Avoid the word 'copy' as that will flag up all sorts of ebay filters automatically, but I've used 'code' on every dang one of mine and never had a problem with the powers that be. I know I'm tempting fate every time I say that but I'm not making it up: I've sold a ton of these and they're a lovely little sideline. As jono said, the UV code for any new release generally sells for £6 or thereabouts, and even region restrictions aren't a problem as the clued-up types can still activate those codes on their accounts.

Don't forget the codes have expiry dates so you should get round to it soon.

The UV codes are usually good after their expiration date. Even if it's a year or so later. It might make them tougher to sell, but if you're redeeming them yourself try them at https://www.myuv.com/ if they're showing as expired elsewhere.

Any issues then vis-a-vis scammers? Like people buying and claiming code didn't work?

Over several years I've only had 1 person claim the code didn't work and that was before I knew about checking the code on myuv. I now take a screenprint from myuv so I can show that to any bidder/scammer that the code was valid.

Also, I've never had to chase buyers for payment of digital codes or file payment not received claims as they usually pay within a couple of hours of the auction ending.

As with Rixx, I've only had one joker try it on. I personally check every single code that I sell so I emailed this dude and said "that's odd, because I made sure it was live just before I sent it to you, please double check your account to make sure it hasn't been redeemed" and, surprise surprise, I didn't hear anything back. That jackass got put onto my blocked bidders list sharpish....

I only had one eagle-eyed ebayer ask if the code was still active because they'd scoped out the date on the photo of the code insert, but I assured them it was and there we go, another code sold.

That reminds me I still need to list the codes from The Hunger Games 4K collection and noticed the first 2 films have the old flyer with expired dates but I'm sure they will be fine.

I once went through my collection and pulled out all the expired codes and auctioned them as a job lot which went for over £45.

Forgive the basic question, but how do you check the code on myuv.com without redeeming it? Also how do you check on flixster.com?

Make sure you're not logged in to either site, then simply put the code into the redeem field and press enter. Myuv will give you a green tick if it's active, and flixster will highlight the 'Enter Code' box in green and prompt you to sign in if the code is live. If it's not, you'll get the appropriate error message pop up.
