I'm not familiar with Nvidia Shield TV. Is it basically the same as Apple TV, only running Android instead? (please forgive my ignorance)

It's actually so much more than the android equivalent.

It can stream PC games from your desktop computer or stream them from the cloud (add-on service), the bundle comes with a game controller.

It can emulate classic Nintendo and Sega games.

It can run Kodi as well as Plex Server doing all the transcoding on the SHIELD device and when you add a USB or Network hard drive you can store tons of media.

If you are not already locked into the Apple ecosystem (or even if you are) you should check out this product on youtube for all the possibilities.
