We're holding our 2017 TV Shootout TM evaluation event in conjunction with CE Week NY on 7/12 - 13, 2017.
Joel Silver of ISF and Kevin Miller of ISF TV will be running the event this year along with Matt and Jeff Murray of AV Pro Store. Joel and Kevin made a significant change to the event this year. They are inviting a top professional team of judges as the panel of experts to vote on the attributes of picture quality to determine "Who makes the world's best TV?" So the evaluation event will be judged by professional colorists, contrast graders, and video engineers. Another change this year is my personal VIP invite list gets full access to the CE Week show floor, the private press room, special access to all private press events before the show opens to the public, the TV Shootout event and all of CE Week's full calendar of special events all at no charge. Value Electronics invited guests will be pre-registered and issued an all access badge. Members of Blu-ray.com can email me at rzohn@valueelectronics.com to be included in our exclusive VIP advance registration. |

My questions:
1.Will there still be an amature vote by the attendees? 2.Will the shootout use both the Sony oled and Z9D? (I believe it should since they are both labeled as flagships) 3.Will all tvs this year be the same size? With both sonys being available in 65", I don't see why it wouldn't be all 65s. 4. From others, How do you get into the event? Do you have to register or can you just walk in? 4.a what's he address? Last edited by ray0414; 03-01-2017 at 05:06 PM. |

The event is limited to the flagship models. Here's the preliminary list of contestants:
Sony 65” A1E OLED TV Sony 65” Z9D LCD/LED LG 65” W7 or G7 OLED TV LG 65” SJ9500 LCD/Nano LED Samsung 65” Q9 LCD/QLED Not sure if Joel and Kevin will include a Vizio or Hisense or any other 2nd tier brand. I leave it up to them. This year the professional panel of experts votes will be used to determine the ranking and winner of the evaluation event. I'll suggest we give ballots to all attendees so they can fill them out as the judges are voting and use the information to see how they compare. Very exciting year for our 2017 TV Shootout! |

^^^ I would definitely use the expert vote to determine the winner. I think having a public vote is a very fun way to get attendees involved and feel apart of the shootout, even though the public vote won't be used to determine the winner,

I think I will attend this one, for sure.
Just sent you an eMail about this, Robert. Treat the missus to a weekend in DC right after. I also think the Shootout is in VE's own store, no? |

Thanks Penton-Man for your kind words and thanks to ray0414 for starting the thread on AVSForum and to all of the fine Blu-ray.com members for all of your contributions!
I've read some good questions and comments on another forum where I am not able to post. I'd suggest they join Blu-ray.com and ask me directly. |

Good luck with that. Unfortunately, except for the most open minded (e.g., DanBa, posting direct links to posts on this forum as he mentioned to us in the HDR Discussion thread), there is an obvious prejudicial forum/website clique-like behavior manifested throughout much of the AV world …. which often trumps recognition of the presence of a superior source of knowledge regarding a particular topic because the *loyalists* view the Blu-ray.com forums as a competitor to the viewership over at their home turf. On the other hand, if one reads a real scientific paper, peer reviewed by an editorial board of experts (‘experts’ meaning practitioners rather than reporters), in the bibliography it is common to see references made to authors from other institutions which could be considered very significant practical competitors because everyone is scrambling for limited governmental grant or foundation money or the constant competition by chairpersons or Dept. heads to recruit the very best researchers, engineers, etc. they can get for their respective company or institution. The sincere desire to learn or express knowledge in the true scientific realm is not bound by forum or institutional fanboyism. With regards to your presence here and this upcoming shootout, I would hope that any potential Monday morning quarterbacks take this opportunity to ask you now about the planned methodology and offer any suggestions for improvement, clarification, etc….with your feedback in response rather than retrospectively berating the TV shootout unmercifully like apparently was done last year. Kind of reminds me of those Monday morning quarterbacking online HDR PQ bashers I've heard about who have now come out of the woodwork to whine and criticize, but were noticeably absent in offering advice or assistance in 2014-2015 to the SMPTE 10E Drafting Group working on perceptual EOTF, or MPEG figuring out signaling for perceptual EOTF in HEVC VUI. |

https://www.imagingscience.com/courseschedule.php As an aside, I think some front projection enthusiasts would be interested in hearing from Joel about what he knows about the SIM2 dual DLP projection system shown at ISE Amsterdam last month by Joe K. …… http://www.sim2.com/home/en/node/22947 I heard from one attendee that the exhibition was poor. Does Joel know if that was related to the projector itself or is there a claim that the source material, The Smurfs2 (https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-S...lu-ray/145677/) is poor. |

I had to keep this secret until it was announced, but Kevin Collins just confirmed he accepted our request to be one of the judges on our panel of experts.
Great line-up of the best 2017 TVs all perfectly set-up, presented and run by the top video experts, Joel Silver, Kevin Miller, Jeff and Matt Murray. Plenty of exclusive Value Electronics VIP all access passes available to what is turning out to be the best TV Shootout evaluation event of all time. ![]() I don’t read HTF especially since they floundered significantly after Blu-ray won the format war so I honestly don’t know how he has reacted/adjusted to losing, but I hope all that baggage he carries does not bias his evaluation of the Sony 65” A1E OLED TV or the Sony 65” Z9D LCD/LED as contenders in your shootout. I’m wondering if the scorecards of the individual judges (named) on that panel will be transparent to the public after the event, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn2Q3NC9wxs#t=4m45s or whether there will only be a summation of their total vote as a judging panel. |
