Such sad news! I attended a couple of his film festivals in Athens, GA (these eventually morphed into the TCM festivals and moved to the West coast) and was amazed by his wealth of knowledge.
I always looked forward to hearing his commentary on movies whenever he hosted on TCM. Thanks Robert Osborne, and rest in peace! |

This one hits pretty hard. I feel like I grew up with this man. I used to watch TCM all the time because that was the only channel that had uncut films. I always loved watching him present movies with all the behind the scenes info he had. Really going to miss him. RIP.

Very sad to hear of his passing. I think many TCM long-time viewers were bracing for it, as he's been all but absent for months. But that doesn't make it any easier to take.
Not only was Robert incredibly knowledgeable about the subject matter, he never presented or discussed it any condescending way. It was as if he was in your living room, sitting next to you, just chatting about the movie you're about to watch and sharing some tidbits. He was a friend separated by a screen, and that's something no other channel had. I tuned in for the 7pm (cst) film intro and Ben announced his passing and said they would have a more significant tribute in the coming days. But for now, they played the TCM Remembers video and then did "what Robert would want us to do...play a classic movie". |

Really surprised there haven't been more responses. In my eyes, Robert was a titan among film historians. I remember when I started really exploring classic film, and watching TCM was my baptism by fire. His charm and incalculable knowledge of the art form made these old films accessible to somebody who had no real reference going in. He spoke with passion and eloquence, and it really rubbed off on me.
Thank you for helping to bring the great films of the past alive. You inspired me in ways I can't put into words. Rest in peace, Robert. |
