It has been 30 years since I've seen it. It's at least as good as those two, perhaps a bit more action, not quite as reflective. Might have been von Sydow's greatest role. Very interesting story as I remember. Probably a day one purchase for me.

DVDBeaver Review: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film6/blu-r...or_blu-ray.htm
Looks good: plenty of grain, good colors, maybe a bit too much bright/contrasty on some shots. Length is 150 min., not 157 as listed here (IMDb says 157min too ![]() |

Per sfi.se the film is noted as being shown at the 157 minutes run time (156 in Denmark but that could be down to how either country rounds off the seconds). Swedish PAL-formatted TV airings are listed at 150 minutes (TV 1/SVT 1 and SVT 2 are commercial free btw). By comparison, the German BD which is 1080i50 is 144 minutes (2:23:46). The Swedish DVD was reportedly 144 minutes as well.

Thanks for posting the notes on the running time discrepancies. I had planned to order the blu ray tonight, but no sale until this is sorted out.

Because of this thread, I just watched Pelle the Conqueror for the first time - on the old DVD. Excellent film! Great coming of age story, as well as a fantastic historical movie. 1850's rural Denmark may as well have been another character in the film. Max Von Sydow was fantastic (as always), as was the young actor who played his son.
Overall, depressing film - especially the scenes involving [Show spoiler] Funny/tragic was [Show spoiler] The ending was quite heartbreaking as well. While the DVD was obviously quite washed-out, the PQ looks great in HD - so, I'm sure this looks excellent on Blu: Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 06-14-2017 at 07:10 PM. |

Thanks for th info.
![]() Yes, probably someone did the math assuming 150 min was the PAL (25 fps) length. |

When classified by Statens Medieråd (the Swedish equivalence to the BBFC), formerly Statens Biografbyrå, it was and is still listed with a 2:36:57 run time.
[Show spoiler] Similarly, Medierådet in Denmark list it with a 157 minute runtime as well. [Show spoiler] Makes me wonder if international theatrical releases may have been edited. |
