Canada I Need Avatar Advice.

I've seen other peoples Avatar and some are really large. I've tried opening a photograph inside Microsoft paint. and then used the Resize function. I tried shrinking it by % going down 10% until I was under the 19.5kb size or the 150x150. when I use Paint and save the picture after resizing I see artifacts in the photo. yet other users have large clear Avatars.

what are people using the shrink their photos or Cartoons so they don't get compression artifacts

Thank You

Ryan

It's been years since I've changed my Avatar here, but from years of experience you can typically upload a photo as is and the site can/will resize it for you. On occassion with really really large photos (mb in size, not kb) it may not let you use it, but most photos under 1mb should upload and automatically resize for you just fine.

As for programs to resize photos. Microsoft Paint works just fine. Just save the resulting image in .jpg format and be sure you start with a large file/image to begin with. I can tell you that any file smaller than 100kb is likely going to have all sorts of issues with how it appears.

If you have a custom avatar and want to keep it as it is, leave the fields below as they are.

Use Custom Avatar

You may upload a new custom image using the controls below.

Option 1 - Enter the URL to the Image on Another Website

Option 2 - Upload Image From Your Computer
Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 150 by 150 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

Upload of file failed. when I try and upload a large file

yet my Profile photo did change.
