Default Friday Night Lights: The Complete Series (2006-2011)

Another Mill Creek Universal release. No word on music edits or whether these will be the NBC versions or the DirecTV versions, though.

To me, along with Six Feet Under, the finest show ever produced.

When the Mill Creek/Universal deal was announced a year or two ago, I figured FNL would be one of the shows that came to Blu, since it's a relatively new show that was shot in HD and no real work would have to be done to get it in shape.

Glad to see I was right, eventually. I'm looking forward to the release.

Terrible news. Mill Creek will once again most likely shaft and discriminate against the hard of hearing by failing to include subtitles tracks that already exist. I guess there's a chance they will do the set right, but my guess is they won't. If so, I will happily eat my words.

Day 1. Loved this show! Can't wait for it.

Being a Football coach myself, it was really fun to watch this show, and I've been wanting to re-watch it for a while now so this is perfect.

As someone who has never seen the show, may I ask what's the difference? And which version(s) is(are) available on iTunes, Netflix, etc...?

Probably not a big deal to a new fan but a lot of the original music has been replaced with orchestral or different artist all together. FNL survived due to it's hardcore but limited fan base and a lot of those fans who connected to the music and the context of the scene felt robbed of "their" original show. An example would be the opening to The Wonder Years on Netflix (now imagine it throughout the whole series).

Netflix does not have the original music version. I've pretty much given up hope on the original coming to bluray.

I hate music replacements.

However, there are only two situations where they hurt... if you're familiar with the original versions, or if the music replacement is badly done, like Fox's first WKRP release or the Universal Quantum Leap DVDs.

If the music replacements were done by the original producers and fit the show, they don't hurt as much. For example, Life on Mars UK. I didn't know until long after I had seen the show that some of my favorite songs used were replacing, say, unlicensable for video Rolling Stones songs. The replacements were well done and you couldn't tell.

OTOH, "hold me closer, terrible dresser" from WKRP? Bad replacement and I'm glad Shout fixed it. Or Universal's original Quantum Leap DVDs that Mill Creek fixed.

Hopefully, FNL had replacements conscientiously done by the producers and not just a hack job.

Fortunately, the wonderful theme song remains intact.

Also, for those worrying about how Mill Creek will handle this release: unlike the 70s and 80s TV shows they've put out, HD masters for the show already exist, so I would imagine they are simply going to use whatever Sony provides.

That's actually worse than the 70s and 80s shows.

We've seen what the old shows look like on Netflix, and it's fairly well known Universal has been remastering their old TV shows. So they're going to look decent no matter what. The only problem with the older shows is syndication vs. broadcast two parters, and some music rights issues. They're not that bad.

But FNL is the worst of both worlds... there's the question of DirecTV vs NBC versions and what music is replaced. Sure, the shows are going to look good because it's a newer show, but that's about all we know.

Another show that was hurt by music replacements was Wiseguy. It hurt it so bad that the "Dead Dog Records" arc has never been released. I would easily pay $250 for a complete series on blu-ray with all the original music intact.

I really loved the first season of Friday Night Lights, but I never did watch the subsequent seasons.

I'll pick this up at some point in the future, after I clear out some of my still-unwatched television shows on Blu-ray.

You should definitely finish it; it has one of the best endings of any show I've ever seen. It's one of my top three favorite shows.
