I found one on Amazon that comes with an HDMI cable for $51.98.
The model is Samsung BD-J5700 Wi-Fi Blu-ray Player. Good price but has mixed reviews. I'd be using it for DVDs in addition to blu ray discs so it needs to be able to play both well. Is a $50 budget unrealistic? |

The last time I bought a cheap or off brand DVD player, whenever it got too hot the movies started skipping. Happened to a portable and a home player, both separate brands. That turned me off of buying any kind of player for less than a hundred dollars. Granted, this was back in the days of Circuit City...

What is the most that you can spend? If you stretch and afford another $50.00, then you can get a nice blu-ray player. The blu-ray players that they're making nowadays they look like toys. You can lift the entire blu-ray player with one finger! I still have one of Panasonic's first generation blu-ray players, and the size and quality of this player, can make two blu-ray players of today. Panasonic doesn't make blu-ray players like this anymore.

I have seen Sony Blu-ray players for around $50 that works great. You just lose the 3-D feature and WI-FI feature when you go that low. However sometimes a $50 Blu-ray player can last 10 years under ideal conditions, and the picture and sound quality is exactly the same for 1080P Blu-rays, when compared to a OPPO for around $549 (except the OPPO has better upscaling for 480i DVD's and 1080i Blu-ray discs). 99% of movies are 1080P, therefore a $50 Sony Blu-ray player will have the same picture quality as a more expensive Blu-ray player. Sony and Panasonic also offer reliable and timely firmware updates like OPPO.
If you wait until the 4rth quarter of 2017 you should be able to find a Samsung or other brand 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player for around $99.99. Personally I do not like Samsung and LG Blu-ray players, however they keep improving over the years (Samsung dropped the 3-D feature on this years 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players which is a disappointment for 3-D fans). I don't need anything too fancy. Just one that will play blu rays and DVDs reliably. One of my main concerns is the DVD upscaling I've read about. I still own a lot of DVDs so I want one that will play them without any video/audio issues.

I was in Costco and they have a Sony Blu-ray player with 4K upscaling, 3D, and WI-FI for only $69.99. That is $20 more then what you were looking to spend, however that is a bargain since 4K upscaling Blu-ray players use to be around $100+ not to long ago. Of course not as good as native 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players.
Costco also had a 2-D Sony Blu-ray player with WI-FI for $59.99. But for $10 more the one with 3D and 4K Upscaling is a much better bargain. |
