Warner Archives has announced today the September 19th release for Porky Pig 101 – a unique 5-disc DVD set that collects 99 black-and-white Looney Tunes (and two Technicolor Merrie Melodies) starring Warner Bros. first cartoon superstar.

Well this is exciting!!!
Kind of a bummer these are not on bluray though...I though WB must have 2k or 4k scans of all of their original shorts by now....

Any word if these shorts are complete or if they have been edited/censored for content?

Whether the set is on Blu-Ray or not, if you love classic Warner Bros animation, BUY IT.

That's right. Jerry Beck and Stu Shokus said on Stu's Show last night that the only way for classic animation to continue on DVD at Warner is to buy this set and make it sell.

More sets are planned after this and to give you some motivation; MGM Tex Avery is on the list.

Very cool, nice to see at least a portion of the black and white cartoons get a release.

It's too bad the people running Cartoon Network nowadays refuse to air pretty much anything from cartoon history, even Boomerang has been mostly retooled. Maybe one of these days we will see the return shows like Late Night Black & White and The Popeye Show.

I do plan on getting this release, but Warner Brothers we have already been here.
I got all the sets on Laserdisk. I got all the sets on DVD. I got the 3 Platinum releases.
I hate to see you back-pedal now to DVD.

Are the E-sales at the Archives that sizable? I just can't fathom that the average person who buys DVD's in the brick and mortar stores even knows the Archives label exists.

Your target market for a porky collector's set is classic animation collectors. A dedicated set of buyers who will buy your product for a good price on bluray. But since you have sold us your product TWICE already, we aren't as keen on paying high prices for the triple-dip.

Do you also realize that playing your Porky DVD on our 4K displays means the 480 data stream will only fill one-sixteen of the pixels? This means the software has to guess at the other 15/16ths of the data (the display algorithms are very good) but why not give us 1080 data?

I am mildly excited for this release. Wish you could have gone the extra mile like a small independent distributor is able to with bluray releases.

at least then would been complete collection of PORKY SERIES - what we have is a DVD only incomplete mess


should be chronological order from 1st Merry Melodies / Looney Tunes, regardless of character on Dual Layer Blu-Rays

1. What's wrong with having it be DVD? HD or not, at least you'll still have over 50 cartoons never before available on home video, and that's what really matters.
2. How is having 20 cartoons per disc "botching"?
3. They just wanted the set to have every black and white Porky Pig cartoon. Why do you have a problem with that?

5. Sometimes it's better to have sets be themed. Like the Walt Disney Treasures DVDs.

Nowhere in the press release did they say it was every cartoon. They said "a unique 5-disc DVD set that collects 99 black-and-white Looney Tunes (and two Technicolor Merrie Melodies) starring Warner Bros. first cartoon superstar." So yeah, they left some off, but never said they were supposed to be there.

Glad you'll be skipping it, though (although I bet you won't, but pretend you do on line just to keep up the outrage).

I emailed Jerry Beck about why no Blu-Rays were made, and this is what he said.

"Several reasons. The main one is that many of the cartoons aren't restored to HD standards. This is an experimental set to see if there is still any demand by consumers for this sort of product. If it sells well, more better (and blu-ray) discs from the collection will be made available."

I listened to Stu's Show; the cartoons are new transfers off of archival prints (not the original negs, like the Golden Collections). They're not the analog tape masters from the Nickelodeon days.

By that, does he means the transfers were done at 480p?

That'd be a shame if true. I know budgets are tight, but 1080p transfers would be future-proofed for a while and could be used again elsewhere.

I know Disney has their animation back catalog preserved (with the exceptions of some missing Oswald and Alice shorts, nothing to be done about that), didn't know Warner Bros. also scanned their shorts collection.

Anyway, DVDs can still look smashing on a good display, given solid mastering. Dr. Syn alias The Scarecrow looks stunning. Anchor Bay's old 90's DVD of The Happiest Millionaire is practically a masterpiece. Can they look better? Sure, but they aren't a finger in the eye, either.

Animation on video has always been a take what you can get situation. It is kind of frustrating to see WB abandoning its second modern release strategy for these shorts for a third of lesser quality than the second (Golden DVDs, Blus, MOD DVDs) but it's impossible for me to balk at them finally taking a comprehensive chronological approach as shown to be the best way to do this by the Treasures sets (the value of which is certainly not negated by the fact that they are DVDs). I haven't watched like 85% of my Golden or Blu sets because I got both all in one chunk and it all seems so slap dash and haphazardly assembled (So far in 5 years of having the DVDs and 3 months of the Blus I think I've watched all of GC 1 and a disc of GC 2 and the bad-80s-LD-quality Tex Avery shorts on one of the Blu sets). A chronological set is way more digestible/sensible for me (I've watched all my Disney Treasures sets despite likewise getting most of them in one chunk).

The problem with doing a chronological release of the Warner shorts is that there are so, so many of them. You'd have to stagger the releases in some organized way and even that would be daunting (is there a market for Bosko, for instance?).

I think we've seen the canary in the cold mine for physical media, sad to say. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Warners go the streaming route for their classic shorts sometime in the future.

It's certainly late in the game for starting all over again. They'd get more mileage at this point out of doing GC 7+ and sticking to new-to-DVD or Blu-ray shorts. I can't imagine the sob story that would actually convince someone that they're capable of following through on any kind of complete line of releases at this point, given that they've aborted twice (thrice if you count Golden Age of LT but WB/WHV can't be blamed for LD going under).

I prefer watching a disc of Bosko shorts to suffering from watching a whole disc of Road Runner shorts.
