Without getting into a fight about aspect ratios, is it technically possible to buy a 3D blu-ray, and mux the movie into a 2D MKV?
The reason I ask is there are a few examples of movies which are open-matte only on the 3D version. If this is possible, would there be an quality loss vs the 2D disc (considering it's a mux and not an encode). Movies where the feature in 3D is different to 2D: -Titanic (3D is open-matte 1.79:1, where as 2D is 2.35:1) -Selected Marvel movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, and others containing IMAX scenes (3D contains open matte framing for IMAX scenes, where as 2D contains 2.35:1 for the whole feature). I'd never crop a 2.35:1 to fit my screen (gross), however if there is an official open-matte version containing additional space, I'd be interested to view, however I am not at all interested in watching in 3D. |

The only thing you need is a program called makemkv. It's freeware while it stays in beta, but it's been in beta for years and gets monthly updates and works flawlessly. Don't let the fact that it's in "beta" fool you - this is a stable, reliable program. It easily allows you in a few clicks to losslessly remux whatever files on the disc you want to mkv with your choice of audio files and subtitles, and for 3D discs, you can select whether you want it remuxed in 3D (select avc and mvc options) or just 2D (deselect the mvc option). It takes just seconds to select what you want.

1. Rip the 3D disc using MakeMKV, click the check mark on the MVC and your preferred audio track & subtitles.
2. Use tsMuxer to convert the MKV file into an m2ts file. Before exporting, make sure the MVC (right eye) is on the second row. Btw, Dolby TrueHD is not supported on tsMuxer unless it has an AC3 core. You would need to use a program called eac3to to convert the TrueHD file to thd+ac3. Now you should have a true frame-packed 3D file that you can play on a modern 3D Blu-ray player via USB. |
