Default Ken Burns' Vietnam on PBS

Anyone watching this? So far, it's amazing. Really good stuff. It should be " must see" for any Vietnam history fans.

I've seen the first three episodes on german television. Unfortunately they are showing a shortened version of the documentary over here. Nevertheless the story so far is very well told.

He said he didn't realize that he was one of the first troops to go to Vietnam. They have showed the episodes that take place during his time in Vietnam but he wants to watch the rest. Since people are mentioning it, my dad was a US Marine.

This is really good. Easily as good as any other of Ken Burns' docs. One thing tho is that each episode is pretty dense, and it is hard watch more than 1 episode a night. With his WW2 doc, I could watch a few back to back. Maybe it's how mad they make me.

My wife and I have been looking forward to this for a couple of months. Her family came to the US as refugees from Vietnam, so it has been interesting to see what led to US involvement in region. I'm hoping to watch the series with her father (who was ~20 years old and living in South Vietnam at the time) over Christmas break to see what his thoughts are.

I'm also enjoying the score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

My dad was in the Marines during Vietnam and most likely won't ever watch this. He avoids war movies. He did see Full Metal Jacket and called it a load of shit.

My dad like the boot camp stuff, but thought the rest wasn't that great.

He did say that Platoon was, for the most part, pretty accurate.

My dad was a Marine in Vietnam, too. He never really wanted to talk about it. I wish he would have before he died a few years ago. I really don't know where he was or what he did over there. I know that he did 2 tours and I think he mentioned Hue a few times.

As for the series, I'm watching the blurays and they are excellent. I'm up to episode 3. Gonna watch more tonight.

Trent Reznor's score is good, too. They use a lot from his other soundtracks, too.

Do the Blu-rays come with Vietnamese subtitles? PBS is streaming episodes with Viet subtitles, but I haven't seen anything about the Blu-rays

Only English and Spanish are soft coded. Any Vietnamese or hard to understand English is hard coded I think.

I usually watch everything with English subs on anyway, so I really hadn't noticed how this was coded.

bummer -- no subtitles means it'll be harder for me to watch with my Vietnamese in-laws. seems like a strange oversight on PBS' part considering they thought to offer a Vietnamese subtitled version online.

in any case, thanks!

No problem. It does seem to be an oversight.

Price on Amazon is now 67.89. Its out of stock at the moment but I ordered anyway since I missed it on release day. That seems like a pretty good price to me since WWII blu is going for only $10 less and it is probably 10yrs older.

Yeah...I've been waiting for a price reduction on WWII for a long time. Good thing it's been streamable when I've wanted to watch it.

Started watching this, I really dislike how he cut it in stories from people so out of step with time period. Like they cut in on random stories from people taking place in 1967 but are talking about 40's and before overall at this point in the episode.
