Default The Devil All the Time (Robert Pattinson, dir. by Antonio Campos)

"The Devil All the Time" (2020) [Netflix]
based on the novel by Donald Ray Pollock

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7395114/

Director: Antonio Campos (The Sinner, Christine, Simon Killer, Afterschool)

Cast: Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Mia Wasikowska, Bill Skarsgård, Eliza Scanlen, Riley Keough, Jason Clarke

Quote:
[...] Earlier this year it was revealed that Pattinson was teaming up on an unnamed project with Antonio Campos, the filmmaker behind “Christine,” “Simon Killer,” and “Afterschool.” Now, Esquire has revealed the title of the film is “The Devil All The Time,” and it sounds like the actor is diving into a pretty steamy role.

“There’s this line in it — and sometimes that’s all you need. And it’s like, ‘Ooh… that’s scary to say’. Because it’ll go down in posterity and I’ll be the one saying it. You literally cannot get darker. It’s ****ing dark. This character is an evangelical preacher in the South in the Fifties, but he’s gleefully bad and kind of funny and charismatic too. I know, it’s irresistible,” Pattinson explained.

He adds the character might be sexually repulsive and violent too, but that just adds to the appeal of the role. “…you know when actors say, ‘I refuse to play someone who does something bad.’ I’m, like, why? That’s ****ing crazy. You can’t do anything bad in your real life. I think if someone needs to play a hero all the time, it’s probably because they’re doing really gross stuff in their real life.”

It all sounds like the film is an adaptation of the book by Donald Roy Pollock, which is set through the 1950s, and also features a preacher alongside a row of oddball characters, in what sounds like a dark and twisted tale. Here’s the book synopsis:

Set in rural southern Ohio and West Virginia, The Devil All the Time follows a cast of compelling and bizarre characters from the end of World War II to the 1960s. There’s Willard Russell, tormented veteran of the carnage in the South Pacific, who can’t save his beautiful wife, Charlotte, from an agonizing death by cancer no matter how much sacrifi*cial blood he pours on his “prayer log.” There’s Carl and Sandy Henderson, a husband-and-wife team of serial kill*ers, who troll America’s highways searching for suitable models to photograph and exterminate. There’s the spider-handling preacher Roy and his crippled virtuoso-guitar-playing sidekick, Theodore, running from the law. And caught in the middle of all this is Arvin Eugene Russell, Willard and Charlotte’s orphaned son, who grows up to be a good but also violent man in his own right.

Production will reportedly start by the end of the year, and between this and Clare Denis‘ “High Life,” it looks like we have plenty to look forward to from Pattinson.

Yes! I'm looking forward to everything new Campos does. Loved Simon Killer and liked Christine. The novel, which I read several years ago, seems definitely something fitting for Campos.

Sounds interesting. Looking forward to it.

And I'll give Pattinson a pass since he's not an American, but southern Ohio and West Virginia are NOT the South.

Tom Holland, Chris Evans, Mia Wasikowsa and Tracy Letts are presumably joining Robert Pattinson in The Devil All The Time!
Quote:
Christine and Simon Killer director Antonio Campos has set up his next film just in time to be a hot Toronto sales package. Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, Chris Evans and Tracy Letts are in talks to star in The Devil All the Time. The pic is an adaptation of Donald Ray Pollock’s 2011 novel that Campos and Paulo Campos penned. Antonio Campos will direct. The film will be produced by Randall Poster, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker of Ninestories Productions. Production is set to get underway in February 2019.

The Devil All the Time now joins other film projects on the burner for Campos, who has signed on to rewrite and direct the Fox Searchlight horror film Splitfoot, and is aboard to direct a prequel to The Omen for 20th Century Fox.

I like how Pattinson has done a complete 180 from the Twilight movies. He got his foot in the door with those films and Harry Potter and then used his momentum to do some really interesting stuff.

Not only is it acquired for distribution by Netflix, but Bill Skarsgard (IT) and Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects) join the film.

Quote:
“It” star Bill Skarsgard and “Sharp Objects” breakout Eliza Scanlen will star in Antonio Campos’ adaptation of “The Devil All the Time,” which Netflix has officially acquired for distribution.

Skarsgard and Scanlen join an all-star cast that includes Tom Holland, Chris Evans, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson and Tony Award winner Gabriel Ebert, who attached themselves prior to the start of the Toronto Film Festival.

Campos is directing and co-wrote with Paulo Campos. Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker are producing through their Nine Stories banner along with Randall Poster and Max Born. Annie Marter and Jacob Jaffke are exec producing.

The story is based on Donald Ray Pollock’s novel and is set in a place called Knockemstiff, Ohio, a forgotten backwoods where a storm of faith, violence and redemption brews. Out of desperation to save his dying wife, Willard Russell turns to prayer which succumbs to sacrifice. This sets our protagonist Arvin, Willard’s son, on his path from bullied kid to a man who knows when to take action.

Production is set to start next month in Alabama.

Skarsgard had a star-making role as Pennywise the Clown in the box office hit “It” and is set to reprise the role in the sequel which bows this fall. He was most recently seen in the Hulu series “Castle Rock” as well as Sundance darling “Assassination Nation.”

Scanlen caught her big break this past summer co-starring as Amy Adams’ sister in the HBO limited series “Sharp Objects.” Following the success of the show, she landed the role of Beth in Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” adaptation, which bows this December.

Skarsgard is repped by WME and Magnolia Entertainment and Scanlen is repped by WME, Independent Management Company and Velocity Entertainment Partners.
