I just picked up The Muppets nearly 35th anniversary edition and the Dark Crystal at Best Buy yesterday for 9.99 a piece. Been wanting both of those films for a long time. Just wondering if some people wait for another anniversary edition of a movie before buying what is currently out on blue. For instance after I bought The Muppets movie realized they might bring out a newer 40th edition in 2019 with better special features. Since that is 2 years away I do not regret my purchase. As for The Dark Crystal have wanted it for over a year and was wondering if I should have waited four a 4k remaster like Labrynth that I bought this year with the new remaster. In the end I decided to just buy it. What are your thoughts?

I usually buy what's available now. Sometimes, the anniversary editions are just a new cover, with 'anniversary' slapped on it. Now if there's a drastic change in PQ and supplements, and if it's a movie I really love, then I upgrade and give away my previous copy. There's not much left in my collection that I'll double dip on. I'd go for these, if better domestic editions ever come out:
The Dark Crystal House of Flying Dagger Predator Near Dark The Stranger Dawn of the Dead (1978) Basic Instinct I'll also note that I'll double dip almost instantly, if Criterion is putting it out. Last edited by Majin Blu; 10-28-2017 at 01:46 PM. |

Goodness. If HoFD and Yimou's Hero could ever get proper blu ray releases.

Blu-ray is the first physical media format I've actively collected, and I really don't like double-dipping, so I'm pretty cautious with my purchases. PQ is most important to me, so I judge my purchases by that--if it has really good PQ, or it's a less popular title that isn't likely to get a better release, I get it. But if it has so-so or bad PQ and it's a bigger title, I hold out unless I can get it for really cheap. Reservoir Dogs and American Beauty are two that I grabbed for $5 each, so it's no issue if superior editions of those come out down the line, and Silence of the Lambs is one I never picked up at all so I'm thrilled that Criterion has finally announced it.
But ultimately, I'm never that sorry if I do have to double dip. It's really important to me to own the best presentation of a film that's available, and even if it stings, I'd rather buy it twice than be stuck forever with an inferior edition. It's just about making judgement calls to avoid paying twice too often ![]() |

Still upset they did not do a special "boxed edition" for Mary Poppins' 50th, similar say to what they released for "Sound of Music", though different studios if I recall.
Now, I'm not a member of the "Disney Club" (or whatever it's called) so perhaps they did something special but on the open market, the only thing special I saw was a cool looking Steel, which I missed but that's okay. I mean... 50th? Isn't that the definition of a milestone? ![]() |

It really depends on the movie. In general, I will just buy what is available, unless it is a anniversary year in which case I will wait to see what's happening. A good case there would be Peter Pan, since next year is I think its 65th and it's due for a rerelease. I also waited for Silence of the Lambs since there were rumors it was getting a new one (and it just got an announcement).
But there are a few I'll double dip on. The two titles you bought, The Muppet Movie and The Dark Crystal, I would definitely buy another edition. The Dark Crystal especially since I only have the foreign release. (That one I'm surprised there hasn't been any announcements on; their facebook has been really active with other merchandise and this is a perfect year for a UHD and new blu-ray.) |

It depends on whether or not the current edition is of sufficient quality, as well as the studio that distributes said film. If the PQ/AQ of the BD on the market now is good, then you should probably buy it and not worry.
Also note that a lot of studios do Xth and then X+5th Anniversary editions with very little (if any) changes/additions to the new release. As such, it's a good idea to check the track record of whoever's got the rights to the film. |

I buy what is out and when a considerably improved edition comes out a few years later, then I buy that too. It’s not like investing in a car or a house, Blu-rays are relatively cheap. I don’t understand why people keep fretting about this.

In response to the OP's situation, I would just buy those now as there is no guarantee a "better" version will ever be released. If there is, then just buy it and sell the version you already have. If you're on top of new release announcements, you should still get some money from selling an older version early enough before word spreads too much.
If I know a better version of a movie is actually coming, I'd wait though (for example, I wouldn't bother buying the Breakfast Club now knowing a Criterion release is coming). |
