I found it as a very, very average movie. The other films must have been bad to very bad if this won as a Best Foreign Picture.

Or perhaps it's you? The movie garnered a 94% fresh rating on RT from 157 reviews (148 fresh), so clearly it's a critically praised film, and likely very worthy of its win. The trailer for it looked great to me, and I've wanted to see it since.

Of course it is my personal opinion. To me it was a very average film, acting is not that great ( not bad either ) and at some times it gets slow. In few scenes ( parking lot ) there are long ( unconfortable ) silences between dialogs, kind of " ok I just said my line, it's your turn, what are you waiting for ", I don't mean long silences to create a special atmosphere or something like that and it's clear that that was not the intention if you see the film. But as I said is my personal opinion.

Exactly, at the the end of the day what matters is how you feel about it. Just because it earned a 94% RT score doesn't mean anything, people are to easily brainwashed by RT scores these days. Boyhood has a 97% RT score and I borderline almost hated that movie.

I agree, and that ending made me cringe ... AND roll my eyes into the back of my head.

I'll never understand this argument here that somehow rottentomatoes or reviews have to power to "brainwash" people. Do people actually bother to think about how this, before they parrot it here ? Good reviews, especial for an art house film, may make people more likely to check out a movie but they can't make them like or dislike a film. And just because you personally didn't enjoy Boyhood doesn't make it a universal truth that it's a bad movie, so your last point carries no weight for anybody but yourself.

I interpreted her pregnant pauses as her feeling sad at being discriminated against , or perhaps dumbfounded by the stupidity of bigots

I could be wrong

Nope. The other films didn't have an agenda. D'you think they give these awards for quality?

Not that politics don't enter into it -- I personally think it won as sort of a consolation prize for Daniela Vega not getting a Best Actress nomination -- but to suggest the other films don't have an agenda, particularly The Insult, is ridiculous. Any film with something to say has an agenda.

Personally, I loved the movie, particularly the lead performance. The only other nominated movie I saw was The Square, so I can't really comment on whether the win was deserved. Between the two I saw, I thought both were successful in different ways. I had more of an emotional reaction to A Fantastic Woman and more of a cerebral reaction to The Square.

Amazing how a movie featuring someone different than you automatically qualifies as having an "agenda"...

The movie never explores why the protagonist is different, why the supposedly "normal" older boyfriend is in a relationship with a transsexual. It only focuses on the antagonists being bad. If that's not an agenda, I dunno what else it is.

Incidentally, the awful Shape of Water also focuses more on the villain's every aspect (because he's white, y'know, meaning "evil") than in the protagonist's "romance" with the monster. Funny how the Latina Elisa Espósito is played by the WHITEST actress they could get their hands on and her closet homosexual neighbour by the most boringly heterosexual actor possible.

Did it really need to be explored? Orlando clearly loved Marina because she was who she was and never made any big deal about it; everyone else, on the other hand, couldn't stop blowing it out of proportion because of their upbringing and prejudices, even the sympathetic cop had her moments where a prejudice couldn't help but slip out.

You're kidding, right?

"Loveless" frequently commented on Putin's "leadership" as a parallel to what was happening in the film, "The Square" was about how well-meaning liberal artists and museum curators consistently demonstrate their insensitive aloofness over the things they're passionate about. Hell, the most hilariously provocative moment is
[Show spoiler]the YouTube video promoting the titular instillation by blowing up a homeless Swedish toddler holding a kitten.
and "The Insult" was about the tensions between Lebanese Christians and Palestinians.

I had to stop it at the half hour mark because I was falling asleep. The worst time to see it was after getting off a morning shoot after sleeping for an hour the morning of the ceremony. I still want to watch it because I make a habit of watching all the nominees and the concept is certainly an interesting one.

This was a great movie with a sort of heroine character. I can see why it won Best Foreign language film.

I caught this movie earlier today, and found it average at best. The biggest mark against it is that the script doesn't give Daniela Vega's character much to do except be a punching bag for ignorant or blatantly transphobic remarks. The film seems to go along in one miserable tone, with few wavering peaks or valleys to make the film more compelling.

This just completely vanished from Netflix/DVD.com.

Are they not carrying this?
