Default "When Time Ran Out" (1980) - in blu ray?

I've been collecting some old disaster movies and I'd like to pick up this one - When Time Ran Out (1980). There's no blu ray available, only DVD. Interestingly, the latest DVD came out from Warner in Mar 2017.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/when-ti...skuId=32712033

It seems odd to me that they would do a new release on DVD in 2017 instead of on blu ray or multi-format. Unless they plan to release another blu ray version at some point to try to get people to double dip?

Anyone have any info on this? Thanks in advance!

I recently picked up "City on Fire", the "Airport" set, and "The Cassandra Crossing" all on blu ray. Looking forward to the new Scream Factory release of "Gray Lady Down".

your best hope is Warner Archive, though I suppose there's a remote possibility now that it could come from Shout. Aside from other factors, like how well it would sell, etc...Often the lack of a BD is because there isn't an HD source available, or the studio is waiting for a new scan or restoration before releasing it. I'm not sure if there's an HD source for this movie or not.

Thanks for the info. I suppose that makes sense.
It looks like Netflix has the Mar 2017 DVD release, so I can see it without investing in it in case there's a later blu ray.

This is my favorite disaster film after Poseidon Adventure. It's kind of hard to watch today because of the dodgy effects but I think it's still a great nailbiter. If there was ever a film ripe for a remake it's this one.

I love all the old Irwin Allen films. The disaster films now have great affects (San Andreas) but somehow don't quite hold the same appeal. Maybe it's the old star power.

Warner Archive has released some terrible movies before, I'm sure they can fit this one into their schedule.

Yes, that's my thinking as well. The WAC rightly gets a lot of flak for releasing some awful movies while having a lot of classics still missing in action, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it appeared soon. A bad film, but I enjoy it & would buy it.

The movie is average but I would buy it instantly on blu-ray because of Newman, Holden, Bisset, Barbara Carrera etc. Great cast.

Hopefully someone can put this out with the Extended cut as well, I don't think that's been available on DVD before, just the theatrical cut.

The DVD cut runs only 109 mins. It's shorter than the 121 min theatrical cut or the 144 min VHS cut.

Of course the film is so dreadful, maybe they're just saving people 12 mins of their lives they'll otherwise never get back.

But I kinda love it for all its cheesiness, and its shameless rehashing of plot elements from The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno.

I forgot that the DVD was a trimmed version, so even the full theatrical cut hasn't gotten a DVD release. I love all of these cheesy bad disaster movies from the late 70s. The earlier ones like Poseidon Adventure were legitimately good, the later ones were just fun to watch due to the star power involved.

Maybe with, "The Swarm," getting a BD release, we may finally get a remaster of When Time Ran Out. (And hopefully of the extended cut!)

The extended home video vhs is a actually cut for TV. The scene of James Fransicus in the shower and scenes of victims of the lava bombs hitting the hotel are trimmed. It be great if they restore the trims and have the most complete version of this so bad it great disaster film and the caliber of actors in this film staggers the mind. For those new to the 70’s disaster genre the top films in quality are The Poseidon Adventure (1972) a spectacular film in all ways, then The Towering Inferno (1974) and Earthquake (1974). What made these films great was the then state of the art effects and tight all star casts. Now the new films have incredible effects but drop the ball by only focusing on one main star and his family with a few throw away characters. The only recent disaster film to capture the feeling if the South Korean film The Tower!
