Default 4K/UHD Reviews

I'm a new convert to 4K/UHD, and I only own about 10 discs on UHD so far. I've been following the disc reviews and it seems like fair amount of 4K discs are actually being scored LOWER in Video Quality than their 1080 counterparts. Some recent examples: The Shape of Water, Thor: Ragnarok, Hell or High Water, It, pretty much all the Harry Potter films, Coco, and the list goes on. What is the benchmark for these reviews? What standards are being applied to the 4K image in comparison to the 1080 image? Is the picture genuinely WORSE in 4K than the 1080 presentation, or is it a subjective analysis based on what the reviewer THINKS the 4K presentation should look like? Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks!

The ratings are relative to the format.
So a 4.5 star UHD rating doesn't mean it looks worse than a 5 star BD rating.

As s_har said, ratings are relative to the format.

I interpret it as a 3 star UHD PQ rating would roughly equate to a 5 star BD/1080p PQ rating.

It’s relative. A 3 star rating is sometimes better than a 5 Star BD rating but in the grand scheme reviews for THIS format are completely useless. Much easier with 1080p since calibration and reference were aligned. Too many variables to consider now. Some think viewing anything on less than an OLED shouldn’t be taken seriously others think any panel that has less than 1000 nits is junk. Then you have your projector enthusiasts. Not to mention viewing conditions.

Which is completely false. My display, which is LED instead of OLED, handles blacks and HDR extremely well.
