Default Region Coding on blu-ray and HD-DVD

Hi all!

I´m blue! :-)

My name is not Ray but wouldn´t that been fun?

I have a question to ask you members and experts in here.

Are there region coding as with dvd on Bluray and HD-dvd?

Are the regions if existing the same as on DVD?

Why do I ask? I ask cause there are some companys in Europe that gives us here the chance to buy Blu-ray movies imported from the US.

If I buy a Bluray player/recorder I wont be able to play those movies on a machine bought in Europe. Right?

I personally do not like the system with region coding. if I want to buy movies in the US it is mostly cause they do not come to Europe at all or cause the release is (as it often is on dvd today) of much higher quality and with nicer packaging and content.

I have a region free dvdplayer but am not sure that it will be possible to buy region free Bluray players. Does someone know more?

I will look forward to answers that can clearify the coming rules that comes built in to the new technology.

I btw already own 5 Bluray titles but no player. I am probably crazy. :-)

Yes, Blu-ray is already region locked and it’s being developed for HD DVD. The layout is different but the US and Europe are in still in separate regions so imported discs won’t play. You might want to check out this rundown over at Emedialive.

They're also a few threads here dealing with this.

Sounds like you might want to pick up a HD DVD player. I'm thinking they might be much more lax about Region Encoding. The 1st generation stuff doesn't support it.

dont bother buying an HD player. i recommend buying bootleg Blu-Ray discs instead, they will come without the region coding.

As pointed out by McBain this topic has come up before. As such, closing thread.

Don't kid yourself, HD DVD is looking into region coding as well. Warner is the only studio on record as against it.
