I suppose despite the huge fan following they enjoyed, they too were susceptible to the onslaught of streaming media. Their death surely leaves a big void in the value priced, high-end BD and Audio space!

Just brought Oppo UDP-203 Region Free finally.

So happy with the purchase. This one is a stuff of legends. What fantastic quality, built and performance!!

Testing JODHAA AKBAR Bodega and other German REM bollywood BRDs in OPPO 203 is clearly superior experience both video and audio quality wise.

Their retreat won't affect many people. The make probably something like 10^-6 of the market share.
Their products aren't for rational minded people, more for extreme enthusiasts who see/hear things or at least think to see/hear things other people don't.

I like to think of myself as rational minded and an enthusiast... while I am not searching for some elusive form of sound or image, I do appreciate good quality in components, especially when it can be had at a value... So not sure where I would fit in your worldview

jokes apart, I actually find the Oppo having discernible improvements over standard Blu-Ray and CD players. Even someone like me, who does not have any refined sense of sight or sound, can tell the difference in clarity and resolution. I personally use it for its fantastic CD/Transport stage and when paired with a good Amp, it can do wonderful things for audio playback. The equally good BD playback and universal player aspect is merely a bonus as far as I am concerned.

But you are right, 99% of the population would find a $30 Walmart bargain bin product adequate enough.
