It's funny really. I was a regular viewer of the Moviedrome series, and there's a few films on there I can't remember. I guess my memory ain't what it used to be.

Have gone through that mammoth list in the starter post of this thread. I do remember seeing Moviedrome in the listings (possibly remember the second Mad Max film in the listings), but I can't recall ever watching any of the films in the season.

Haven't seen the remake of The Beguiled. Seen the original (very good, but that one scene was hard to watch and listen to).

I remember watching quite a number of them, but mostly from the 1988 to 1992 seasons. Alex Cox used to introduce the films for the first few years before Mark Cousins took over, probably around the mid-90's sometime. I used to tape a fair few of them as well.

Why the BBC can't bring back something similar again, I just don't know. I'm old enough to remember the horror double-bills the BBC used to show in the late 70's and early 80's over the weekend. As a kid, these were a treat for me.

Curated movie seasons used to be a BBC2 speciality, as did themed movie seasons running for months - I was introduced to Ealing films when they used to run primetime double bills with a vintage newsreel between them on BBC2 - but they went from being a mainstay of late-night weekend TV and increasingly became sidelined to late-night fillers at Christmas and now not even that. The reason on the main BBC channels is that 'old' films are no longer that much of a ratings draw anymore now that we can stream or buy them ourselves so it's not worth going to the expense, especially with the arts budget constantly slashed, but it would be nice if they could try something like it on BBC4 at least.

Yes I agree, I would have liked BBC4 to try something along the same lines - in fact I've even heard some comments shortly after the channel began broadcasting that it was going to be similar to what BBC2 used to be in bygone days. By that, I was rather hoping for something like a classic film night which could appeal to us film buffs, however you are quite right, the BBC will probably think that film fans will just buy DVD's or blu-rays instead - which to be fair I do.

Imagine if the BBC promoted something like this now instead of the endless series of depressing dramas they churn out featuring troubled detectives investigating murders in rain swept environments. I swear the same filter gets used for everything they make (for the record I don't watch any of these but the missus Mum does).

I like Line Of Duty and Broadchurch, most other shows on broadcast are like you say, rubbish. The last cracking show except those two was Life On Mars.

Yes, totally agree with you. Soaps, make-over shows, reality TV - these are the kinds of programmes I detest. It's the reason why I don't watch a great deal of terrestrial TV any longer. The BBC (and even ITV to some extent) used to have decent interesting schedules which catered for everyone's tastes, but nowadays all channels are littered with the same garbage.

Channel 4 when it first began in the 80's used to be good because it was different to the other 3 channels, but sadly it's pretty much like the rest of them now. BBC4 is OK........at the moment.

I believe Akira was shown on BBC2 once in the early 90's (with sub titles); not sure if it was under the Moviedrome banner.

Some of the years quoted regarding the films cinema release appears to have been incorrect in the original post, so I've gone through them all and worked off the IMDB site to correct them.

Thanks Tob. When I was going through the website, there appeared to have been one or two errors on the 1976 dates as they weren't in sequence. Hopefully the dates shown here are OK now.

Although quoted as horror double bills, there were some sci-fi films mixed in there too, for example This Island Earth and The Incredible Shrinking Man. Speaking of which, I'm almost certain the BBC had a season of sci-fi films sometime in 1983, but I'll have to check that out.

I had the VHS with the dubbed version and remember my Dad stayed up to watch it on telly with sub titles. With anime being more popular than ever I wish the BBC would take a chance and show some. Film4 are doing a great job with their frequent screenings of Ghibli movies.
