Hong Kong Asian 3D Blu-ray Imports - Hong Kong Japan China Taiwan Thailand Korea etc

Given Asian audiences' love for 3D, a lot of Asian films are either shot natively in 3D or converted to it. Many of these are available on Region A 3D blu-rays with English subtitles, but American audiences don't often have much information about the quality of their 3D. Therefore, I thought it would be helpful to start a dedicated thread for those of us considering various Asian 3D imports.

For those of you who own some of these films, please post your thoughts about the strength or weakness of the 3D in specific Asian titles.

Monkey king 2
Journey to the west 2
Sword Master
Flying swords of dragon gate inn
Rise of the Legand
Call of heroes

All have outstanding 3d. Bright, deep layers with nice pop outs.

Call Of Heroes does not have outstanding 3D, it's riddled with conversion errors. I'd still rather watch it that way than in 2D, but it looks like garbage compared to the others you've listed.

BleedOrange has pretty much listed all the best stuff, though I would add:

Rise Of The Legend - a conversion, but one of the best ones:

Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy - this doesn't get a lot of love but it's highly entertaining with some great 3D:

White Haired Witch Of Lunar Kindgom - a very good looking remake of Ronny Yu's Bride With The White Hair:

Black and White: The Dawn of Justice- the 3d is good, at times it felt like I was there with the characters, depth, layering and separation were good, with a real sense of space, some of VFX shots especially the helicopter looks very iffy.

Wolf Warriors- The 3d conversion is decent, what was really surprising about the 3d was fact that there was debris that came flying out of the screen.

My favorite Asian 3D Blu-ray by a wide margin is Young Detective Dee Rise of the Sea Dragon. I have never seen better quality 3D and the sets and effects are terrific. Read BleedOrange11's excellent user review here:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Young...0/#UserReviews

The only problem is that it is out of print and extremely hard to find. However, I just checked eBay and there is one copy there that some person who acts very quickly can grab while the opportunity is there.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Young-Detect...-/122591924340

Good luck on being the first to grab this! There may not be another opportunity for a long time.

UPDATE: It's gone.

The Best 3d:
The Taking of Tiger Mountain, the 3d is amazing, shot and intended to be seen in 3d and it shows, the 3d really sucks into these battles, the 3d is very consistent throughout the entire feature, separation is spot on, depth is also spot on, pop outs are very good, they really don't skimp out on the pop outs, a very demoworthy disc for sure.

Stand by Me: Doraemon, the 3d in this film is amazing, they really took their time with the 3d and the result is a immersive 3d presentation, you have characters flying in and out of the screen, lots of pop outs and the depth is very good, separation is very good too, pure 3d eye candy in this film, and I liked the film as well, the 3d in this film is worth it, highly recommended.

The Worst 3d:
Johnnie To's Office, the 3d is very weak, I was taking off my passive 3D glasses in some spots and noticed the 3d was nonexistent, one of the worst 3d conversions I've seen, the 3d is bad, don't waste your time with the 3d version of this film, not worth it.

Baby Blues - I think the 3D is pretty good in terms of depth and a few popouts, but the movie itself isn't great.

Black and White: The Dawn of Justice - Average 3D and I think the movie also isn't great.

The Four II - Really good 3D and good movie. I have part III as well, just haven't watched it yet.

I just watched Monster Hunt - the 3D is very good but not great (I'd give it a letter grade "B"), but the story is flat out loopy and has a great cast - it's charm and oddness lingers on the mind

I enjoyed monster hunt. It was quite funny even with the English dubbing. The 3D helped make the film.

Iceman also made good use of 3D but at times was hard to keep up with.

Best so far is Flying Swords of Dragon Gate Inn.

Still have to watch Mr. Go and Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe.

But you guys have me now interested in The Taking Of Tiger Mountain. Gonna check that one out.

I notice Asian conversions of Dr No, Shane, North by Northwest and Charade from an importer on eBay.

Anybody have any of these conversions and are they any better than simulating our own flat versions at home? Are they legite or knock offs?

Beware. Those are knockoff autoconversions.

Thanks everyone. Figured as much.

If 13th man wouldn't even touch them, that's all anyone needs to know.

Default The Four III

I watched The Four III 3D last night. I think the second film was a little better, but part III still has really good depth. Only a couple of good pop-outs that I remember. I would say that this trilogy is worth a try if you are into fantasy or 3D.

As BleedOrange11 said they are autoconversions, avoid those.

So there's no legal way to obtain "Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon" on any region? I would like to buy this but it seems that's not even a possibility.

You can get it if you don't need English subtitles! There are German dubbed and Italian dubbed versions available (both include the original Mandarin audio as well), but neither have English subs.
