Mods can move this if it’s not in the right spot, wasn’t sure where to put it. I’m having disc cleaning issues and I thought I would post here to see if there’s any suggestions. I’ve heard that a good microfiber cleaning cloth is best to clean discs with. I had one, but after a little while, I had some major problems with streaking all over the disc while using the cloth and attempting to clean. I thought the problem was with the cloth, so I ran it through my washing machine, no detergent, air dried, just as a site suggested. I thought it would fix the issue. Nope! Still had issues with streaking.
Figured I would try a different microfiber cloth. Same exact issue. Major streaking while using the cloth, and I thought it looked even worse than before using the cloth. I then thought about using a t-shirt, as it seemed like my only other option. It seemed a bit better at first, but then streaking became an issue again. Any suggestions as to what I should try next? I sometimes feel like pulling my hair out. I’m very particular about the cleanliness of my discs, and streaks all over discs make me want to go crazy! ![]() |

I'm kind of at a loss as to what may be causing the streaking. I've only had this happen once or twice when out of desperation I cleaned a disc with the shirt I was wearing (this happens frequently with my camera lenses), but it typically comes right off with a microfiber cloth. That is typically salt I assume, as it is also a real issue sometimes when I shoot photos around high ocean surf.
I did have an issue with a microfiber TV cleaning cloth one time, with a looped terry cloth texture. It was constantly shedding fibers that were giving the discs the appearance of being nicked (scratched) all over. There was no way to wipe the fibers off, and I was forced to rinse the discs under cool water and dry them to remove these fibers. Although this led to a very faintly speckled appearance on some parts of the discs, they continue to play back just fine. I would try just exhaling on the disc and quickly wiping it to introduce the slightest amount of moisture. If that doesn't work, I'm really not sure. ![]() ![]() |

Unless it was a rental or a second hand disc which had dirt on it, I’ve never cleaned a single one of my nearly 1000 blu-rays. Why would they need cleaning when kept in their box and handled with care ? Even if there is streaking, the disc still should play. Just leave them be and stop "pulling your hair out", you are creating a problem where there wasn’t one.

I have had to clean the occasional blu from time to time (mostly used discs I’ve purchased from local record stores). If there are oily fingerprints, gunk on them, I’ve have good results using a small drip of blue Ivory dishwashing liquid on them. Just lightly clean both sides with the suds, then just lightly blot dry with a napkin/paper towel. Works every time.

Try to use a slightly wet micro fiber cloth that is clean. I had my worst discs about all fixed like this. Might help to rub gently with gently hot water or if not working try to clean disc with soup on both sides like you wash your hands or eye glasses gently but with care. Then dry well before you put them back to cases or watch them.

I accidentally smeared peanut butter on one of my Blu-rays. After that, the disc was Skippy.

I heard toothpaste was good on regular CDs and DVDs that were scratched, and it did help on a scratched Playstation disc that didn't want to read. But I don't know if that's good for blu-rays since they're a different type of disc technology. I can only advise not to do the old concentric circles thing (to keep from causing read errors). Little circles near the dirty spot are okay.
