Dan Aykroyd is putting a new band together, and he’s going A-list all the way. While in Toronto for National Caesar Day to promote his wildly successful Crystal Head Vodka, the former “Saturday Night Live” star shared who he’d like to see cast in the upcoming, all-female reboot of his hit movie “The Blues Brothers”. “I like Lupita Nyong’o, and I like Taylor Swift,” the 65-year-old comedian revealed. “She’s got all the chops. She can sing, she can burn down guitar.” Aykroyd — who co-starred as Elwood Blues alongside John Belushi, who played brother Jake — outlined the premise of the new sequel. “In this movie, these ladies inherit the franchise from Elwood. You know, they get the Bluesmobile. They get to drive the Bluesmobile, they get to fight the Klan and the Nazis — it’s really neat.” The Canadian comedy legend created the original band with Belushi as part of a musical sketch on “SNL”, which spawned a #1 album (1978’s double-platinum “Briefcase Full of Blues”) and the hit movie. He continues to perform as Elwood Blues alongside Jim Belushi, younger brother of the late “Animal House” star. Just keep Melissa Mccarthy and Paul Feig away from this Last edited by ben6543; 05-25-2018 at 03:26 AM. |

If Taylor Swift was in a female version of The Blues Brothers I'd probably build a doomsday bomb shelter because the world is ending.

They can't inherit the Bluesmobile, it disintegrated once it reached the assessor's office. I might be the biggest fan of the sequel here (given that I actually enjoy it), but even I don't count that car as legit.
I am all for girl versions of movies, but they need to make sense. This one doesn't. A female 007 could work because 007 is the agent code. Laura can take over for Logan and be a new Wolverine. MiB can be anyone. But the Blues Brothers are Jake and Elwood; BB 2000 barely got by with John Goodman's Mack (who knows how it would have been with Belushi's brother). |

It just reeks of outright laziness, pure and simple. I guess creating original works with different cast is too much work when you can ride the coat tails of someone else's IP. BTW, If some did an all male led of Steel Magnolias or Fried Green Tomatoes, they're are folks that'll lose their collective s. |

I'm also glad Universal is still cranking out Bond movies and Disney has revived Star Wars. Sure, that too reeks of outright laziness, I guess but the movies are pretty fun so... ![]() There are countless examples of people riding somebody else's coattails and producing awesome entertainment. Though I'm not sure what any of this has to do with Dan Aykroyd and The Blues Brothers. ![]() Ohhhhh, wait, are you talking about the fact that he and Belushi performed all those songs they didn't write? I dunno, I kind of liked that. |

This was also the problem with Ghostbusters, it was a "lightning in a bottle" franchise created by a bunch of men with a very masculine world view, and Hollywood thought a female-centric remake aimed primarily at women was going to be well received with no backlash at all? Anyone with half a brain could see that coming! Loads of properties from the 70s and 80s you can reboot and replace men with women, but you've got to apply common sense, and it seems nobody in Hollywood is really doing that. Something like Roadhouse for instance could work with a badass female lead because the fanbase isn't so rabid and it doesn't have that big, big iconic status, plus it's a property that's ripe for gender flippery because the original was basically a western-reworking with machismo ramped up to 11 that didn't take itself too seriously and a talented scriptwriter could easily subvert that. |

Well... you have to be for sale in order to sell out. And Dan Aykroyd is definitely "for sale".
If you believe all the stories about Bill, Harvey and Bryan.. all they need to do is sell themselves into the sex trade, otherwise known as "business as usual" on the west coast. |
