Default Worst bonus features on a Blu-Ray?

Seems like labels feel the need to pad out their special edition Blu-Ray releases with as many bullet points as possible. When an obscure film where most of the cast are unavailable or too expensive to interview now, it seems like some really reach in terms of getting almost anyone to be interviewed.

So, what's the worst supplemental material you've seen? Have any craft services or accounting department people been interviewed to give their recollections of the film's production?

Not exactly what you are asking, but to me the worst bonus features on any discs was the BD Live stuff. It never seemed to work right, and slowed down the disc. Sometimes it would glitch and then I'd have a hard time getting out of it and on to the movie or other features. I ALWAYS skip past that om any disc that has it.

For DVD it was since you went from VHS which was linear fast forward and rewind.

Although considering a lot of “budget” Blu-ray discs including Universal now just have pop up menus, Scene Selection would be a fantastic bonus feature. Not fun to just chapter skip like on Laserdisc.

I mean if you want to make such an argument, but I'd say it's silly to consider that a bonus feature on Blu-ray in the context that we're discussing.

That is true for most releases...

I’m waiting for a marketing team to come up with the idea of slipcover as a special feature. Wait... looks at Shout/Scream and MVD and even Mill Creek ...um nevermind.

Actually a lot of early blu-rays would list scene-selection (chapters) as a bonus feature alongside the trailer. Perhaps a leftover from DVD days and to cover up for just featuring the trailer and basically being a barebones disc.

More of a pet peeve, I wish multiple talking head interviews were edited together instead of isolated pieces (Shout). Imagine something like Never Sleep Again or Crystal Lake Memories with individual segments for each participant.

I also don't like "making-of" EPKs that are 2 minutes long, and basically glorified trailers.

This. Some of them are pretty good, but the worst I've seen is Ken Selden from the Cherry Falls Blu-ray (he was the writer). He was obviously somewhat nervous, and he stumbled and paused a lot, saying "ummm" every other sentence. It was awkward and almost exasperating to watch as it went along. What I would've done as an editor is show production photos and/or video during certain parts, and edit down the interview audio accordingly.

I can understand organizing it this way for some cases though. If all you've gotten for interviews are the writer and one supporting actor (as was the case with Cherry Falls), then there's no way to comprehensively edit them together for one bonus feature. It's just easier to present them as two separate features.

Then you've got Black Christmas where clips from old 2000 interviews were used for various traditional making-of docs, AND the entire uncut interviews are also on the disc separately. I'm very happy with the bonus features on that disc, but between the three commentaries, four making-of docs (one focused more on the film's legacy), those archival interviews, and Shout!'s new interviews, there was a LOT of overlapping information. If there's anything you want to know about the history of that movie, it's covered on Shout's set, and covered more than once. I think Lynne Griffin and Art Hindle have both been interviewed like five times each just for that movie.

When dvd was still new they would list scene selections, animated menus and biographies as an extra, so... But back then nobody had internet so they could look it up for themselves.

Bad extras nowadays are those 5-minute EPK's and making of's or interviews with cast and crew that last 15-30 seconds.

That is pretty asinine, especially considering the premium you have to pay for them.

This I don't mind, provided that the trailer for the movie you're actually watching is contained as well. Sometimes it's fun to check out trailers for similarly-themed movies, to know what to pick up during the next Kino sale.

It's odd when you're on the main menu and you select "bonus features" and all that's there is one single solitary trailer. Why not just put "trailer" on the menu instead of "bonus/special features".

MGM (Mostly Fox due to them distributing their home video releases) is the biggest offender to this with their pop up menus. I think they don't bother to change it due to it being a fairly basic pop menu and all that extra work to change it to "trailer" doesn't seem worth it.
