Universal Studios Abominable (2019)

As you might know, the Chinese and now called Pearl Studio (previously Oriental Dreamworks) is no longer working exclusive for Dreamworks Animation. For example, the upcoming movie Over the Moon, is a partnership with Netflix. They will work with different partner studios.

Pearl chief creative officer Peilin Chou had this to say:

The studio wants to be a “premier family entertainment brand.” - “We are not afraid of our movies having a sophistication, and also being earnest, inspiring and joyful, versus cynical. Perhaps most uniquely, we are looking to awaken our audience. This means promoting diversity and global citizenry in our films – not in a way that is preachy or political, but in a way that just reflects the world as it really is. This gets to the heart of who we are as a company.”

Abominable has a U.S. release date of September 27th, 2019. Its name changed from Everest in May this year, and the film will be distributed by Universal Pictures stateside, and by Pearl in China. The director is Jill Culton (Open Season), with Todd Wilderman (Trolls, The Croods) as co-director. The film taps into Pearl’s desire to tell more Chinese-centric stories.

“One of the unique things about the film is that this is the first time a major global animated film will be set in modern day China, and will feature modern day Chinese teenagers,” said Chou. “Of course Kung Fu Panda 3, which we co-produced, was also set in China, but that was ancient China rather than modern day, and it was animals rather than humans. We are very excited to provide a backdrop and portrait of contemporary China, and believe it provides for a compelling hook, look, and setting for unique and engaging storytelling.”

In a few days, we might get a first look on this project via Annecy 2018.

Why have there been THREE animated yeti/abominable snowman/sasquatch movies within the last year?

I did.

I find it funny it opens the same weekend as Smallfoot did last year.

Thanks. I was wondering the same thing. I guess these animation studios all wanted to do a Bigfoot themed movie in the past 2 years now.

Son of Bigfoot - 16 August 2017
Smallfoot - September 28, 2018
The Missing Link - April 12, 2019
Abominable - September 27, 2019

Saw a trailer for this with Missing Link no less, and it looks horrible and cringey.

I feel like they're trying to make a Toothless clone here, but set in modern day Asia, and nothing that makes HtTyD magical. Who knows, it could be good. I enjoyed Smallfoot, and Missing Link quite a bit more than I expected

Honestly, it might be the Go Your Own Way against a violin, but that trailer is really doing it for me.

the 3D trailer I saw "looked" great, but honestly that aspect alone wouldn't compel me to watch it.

I thought this was pretty good. It definitely doesn’t do anything new (third Yeti animated film in a year as well, even though it is pretty different from Missing Link and especially Smallfoot) but it plays well with a proven formula. 3D is nice as well for people who want to see it in that format (opened with a first person sequence, and are a lot of tasteful pop out elements). Trailers were Playmobil, Jumanji, Playing with Fire, Cats, Trolls Wold Tour, and a 3D trailer for Frozen 2.

Hmmmm, you may have convinced me to see a 3D showing this weekend. They seem to be pretty limited. My main theater has it in Dolby Cinema, Mandarin, and Spanish; but the 3D screenings end after Sunday. A lot of locations don't have it in 3D at all.

Bring back hand drawn animation because this looks like balls.
