Sony Pictures Little Women (2019)

Greta Gerwig Eyes ‘Little Women’ With Streep, Stone, Ronan, Chalamet Circling (EXCLUSIVE)

Quote:
“Little Women” is drawing big talent.

Following her critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated directorial debut, “Lady Bird,” Greta Gerwig is eyeing “Little Women” as her next directing gig.

A-listers Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Saoirse Ronan, and Timothee Chalamet are in talks to star in TriStar’s retelling of the American classic with Florence Pugh also in talks to star. The movie would mark a reunion for Gerwig, Ronan, and Chalamet. The young actors starred in 2017’s coming-of-age comedy “Lady Bird.”

Ronan would play the protagonist Jo, Stone would portray Meg, Streep would play Marmee, Chalamet would play Laurie Laurence, and Pugh would play Amy. Sources tell Variety the studio is expected to test a handful of actresses opposite Stone before the July 4 holiday for the role of Beth.

The project has been set up at TriStar for some time, with Amy Pascal set to produce. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the production for Columbia Pictures.

Gerwig was initially brought in to rewrite a draft, but following “Lady Bird’s” success, Sony amped up pre-production in order to woo Gerwig into picking this as her next movie.

After securing her dream cast, sources say Gerwig is close to committing to “Little Women” as her next directing job.

The novel by Louisa May Alcott, which follows the March sisters in post-Civil War America, has been adapted several times into feature films, with the 1994 version starring Winona Ryder being the most popular. The BBC’s “Little Women” miniseries aired late last year.

This would mark a major coup for Sony and Pascal, who have always coveted the IP, but wanted to make sure the right pieces were in place before pushing the project forward. If this deal makes, the package of high-profile talent ensures a fast-track into production.

The timing for the ensemble works out as well. Streep is about to finish HBO’s second season of “Big Little Lies” and can be seen next in Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns.”

Stone had been eyeing several options after wrapping production on “The Favourite,” which is expected to be an awards contender when it opens in November. As for Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” stars, Ronan just finished shooting “Mary Queen of Scots,” which bows in the fall, and Chalamet recently started production on the Netflix pic “The King.”

Didn't they just make a TV series out of this?

There's also a Christian-y version of this coming out with Lea Thompson in theatres coming out in September.

They remake this IP so much.

I'm KINDA getting sick of Ronan, tbh.

And I think I prefer the cast of the PBS version. Willa Fitzgerald (fell in love with her from MTV's Scream) and Kathryn Newton (fell in love with her in Supernatural). + Emily Watson, Angela Lansbury, and Michael Gambon?! Greta, I don't know why you've done this, but you have an uphill battle to best what's already out there.

(Please don't make it too quirky)

And it's an uphill battle that she can not and will not win. The 1994 version was a masterpiece in my eyes. It was perfectly cast with strong veteran and up and coming talent along with being a well made and well directed film.
I haven't seen the PBS version but what I know is that after that, I don't see anyone sniffing that area.

Who would?

Anyway, this sounds amazing. Great cast, Greta, and it's a really good story.

BTW, the reason it's been made so often is because people love it.

I recommend the 1933 (June Allyson), 1949 (Katherine Hepburn) and of course, the 1994 versions.

I can't vouch for the other versions.

I don't know much from Greta Gerwig, just her Damsels in Distress movie which I didn't care for and Ladybird which I thought was just average...BUT I'll watch just about anything with Saoirse Ronan and Emma Stone, Meryl Streep just adds to it.

I don't think I could have any less interest in this.

A story that's been done way too many times already and isn't that interesting to start with, a director who made a decent but overrated film, an actor who gave a decent but overrated performance in another film last year...

Stone and Ronan almost make it slightly appealing, but even they can't get me excited about this project.
