I'm sure there are legal hoops and financial hoops to jump through, and this is obviously a huge undertaking. One of my main concerns is the storage of the material - if it's indeed at the point of deterioration/vinegar syndrome, then that can very well complicate matters enormously, or even destroy any hopes of it happening. But again, we just don't know at this point. All we can do is hope that the restoration happens. What's too bad is that this author was throwing around estimates of $3,000,000 to restore it. Considering how many crap films these days get made that cost 50 times that amount, it's a shame that they can't come up with this cash. Is Penthouse really incapable of just dumping the 3 million into this to get it done? Why are so many legal people trying to stop it from happening, according to the author of the article? I don't know if anybody will ever get all the answers. |

It reshuffles a couple of scenes so that they're finally in the correct order, and substitutes the hardcore material for rough-looking, softer footage originally shot by Tinto Brass. It's basically an edit which aims to bring the film closer to Brass' vision, although the bulk of it is identical. We might actually be getting a proper director's cut in the not-too-distant future.

Why is the audio commentary by Helen Mirren missing?

Couldn't care less about Mrs. Mirren's commentary track when they already fu*ked up pictures aspect ratio. You get 1.85:1 insted of 2.00:1. That's rape!

I think you're referring to Io, Caligola which is a repressed Italian version by Brass himself in 1984. This version has changed the mood of the film as completely compared to the Penthouse 156 min version. I personally still have this Italian version on DVD. A) It has alternate opening scenes (In the opening sequence, it starts of with Tiberius's funeral in a freeze frame with a completely different music this time) B) Some of the music has been changed and replaced in many areas. C) Some extra scenes which were not presented on the 156 version can be seen here but they're nothing special though. D) So many hardcore scenes that were re-created by Guccione are eliminated in this version as completely along with many explicit scenes. E) All were exclusively dubbed in Italian, so yes, this version is only available in Italy. Frankly speaking, I personally think this version could have been an interesting version but it's rather flat even if you can speak Italian. Not only so many sex scenes were terribly edited out, but Italian dub itself doesn't work well for the film, IMO. Last edited by leoganzi; 07-04-2018 at 06:34 AM. |
