That's incredibly random, lol. I have the Capaldi box set, but would gladly swap it out for the 4k disc if this is true.

No, it's the one where fandom gets asked to pull the stick out of their butts.

"Change, my dear, and not a moment too soon."

This is the one where the Doctor regenerates into the Doctor. Time lords swapping genders on regeneration is not a recent gimmick and has been part of the canon for ages. The show’s creator, Sydney Newman, wanted the fifth Doctor to be a woman.

Very interesting..

160 minutes too, apparently. Could this finally be the extended cut? Over 2.5 hours seems quite excessive though.

Would be great to see Doctor Who get the 4K treatment, especially as Series 11 has new cameras/lenses

This release is certainly unexpected. Anyone know how the episode was produced? I would have thought we'd have heard something sooner about it being filmed in UHD - especially given all the iPlayer testing the BBC has been doing.

Given the 2010-esque change of the whole production for Series 11, it would not surprise me it will be one of the first shows to be produced in the format. But I'm not convinced the switch happened in time for TUaT.

I suspect if the show does go UHD on a regular basis, they'll be rendering a lot of the VFX at a lower resolution for a while - most likely sticking at 1080i. Most movies don't get full 4K treatment still, so a TV show to get it would be odd (especially on a BBC budget).

It is a recent gimmick, dreamt up by gagmeister Steven Moffat when he took over as 'showrunner'.

Sydney Newman had nothing to do with Doctor Who beyond creating the actual idea in 1963. In the mid 80s Newman was brought in by Michael Grade for one meeting to ask what he would do with the show now. The ideas Newman presented were rightly ignored by the BBC as ludicrous.

Yes! I’m behind this. As a massive Who fan I’ve been waiting for the show to hit the format. Hoping they port some of the earlier series across too, as it’d help a lot with their dodgy encodes on the Blu-rays

Well, this is exciting news. IIRC Twice Upon a Time was recorded natively at 1080p25, so it would be an upscale, but what makes this very interesting is that I believe that the 4K television standard and the 4k UHD Blu-ray disc standard incorporate 25p and 50i/p frame-rates as a requirement everywhere.

So, this could be the first Doctor Who release in North America that doesn't have to go through a standards conversion to make it play at 60i or 24p, which is amazing news.

Sadly, I don't think it's a requirement.

My US 4KTV can play 50 but do all others do? What about no-frills/early 4K US players. If the answer is no then the US/Canada releases would have to be 2160p24 or 60.

There's no UK 4K listing yet, maybe that one could be a 25/50 release?

What model do you have? Last I checked, most (if not all) US set don't do 50. Granted, that was 2 or so years ago that I last looked up anything on it, so I supposed it's possible some models now are capable of 50 in all/more markets.

An OLED65CP. Checked with PAL DVDs and 25/50 BDs playing with player on forced PAL output (not on MultiSystem/AUTO or NTSC). (Btw TV doesn't report the frame rate but neither it does for 24, 30 or 60).

Don't think I have a 50p UHD to test with that yet, just a couple of 60ps.

Sorry I took so long to check back on this thread.
