Hey Guys,
there are many movies which have a IMAX release with the IMAX aspect ratio. But i don´t understand why we get often not this ratio on the Blu-Ray?! There enough examples of movies, where we are lost 26% of the Picture at the Blu-Ray: Avengers:Infinity War (the sadest decision of all movies) Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazars Revange Beauty and the Beast (Live-Action) Only the Brave Blade Runner 2049 Maze Runner: The death Cure Oblivion ... WHY? Maybe because of an contract with IMAX? Who descides which version of the movie will press at the Blu-Ray? I hate the big black bars on my screen. But i hate it much more, if i know it exist a version without this bars :-( Last edited by Jonnyxll; 07-13-2018 at 07:22 PM. |

Deakins' preferred version for BR 2049 is in 2D and in its OAR.

I think there's a belief among studios (and it may very well be supported) that the general public doesn't like the shifting aspect ratios during home viewing. This might be why digital distributors (I only know of iTunes from personal experience) no longer present stuff like Christopher Nolan's movies this way when the disc releases do. -- The Dark Knight on iTunes used to, and then it was removed. I almost bought Dunkirk digitally until I found out they didn't include the IMAX ratio.
I think it's fine. I'd love to see the option available a lot more often. My prediction / wishful thinking is that studios will try and sell the public a little more on this feature for home viewing in the future, and use it as a draw for people to repurchase some titles. |

So doesnt explain that situation. This is why all movies should be 1.85 anyways. ![]() |

I also wish there was a trend to get more available information on the screen. Open that shit up I want to see everything! Director approved aspect ratio be damned! Even if it is on a separate disc or separate release. Especially considering everyone owns huge high rez TV's now.

Meh. Not everyone actually has a vague chance of doing that. I'm in an Australian state capital, but I'd need to fly to another state to see anything in imax. Technically I could make the effort, but no amount of money under a million dollars would make me even consider wasting my time and effort to do that. Let alone pay for it myself. I'm never going to reach the end of my life thinking I wish I had more money. Time? Yes...

But it would be nice for the IMAX scenes to open up to give the more immersive feeling of a larger image, which is the whole point. |

what in the world does seeing a close to old school aspect ratio have to do with people not bothering going to an IMAX theater? 70'-100' screen is a slight difference compared to most homes ![]() and I mean come on, nobody bothered to go to IMAX theaters for all those decades when every single TV set was in near IMAX ratio and people watched close to that ratio all day long???? |

Because a lot of these IMAX films were composed with the standard release ratio in mind but were simply protected for IMAX showings.
On an IMAX screen, the human eye essentially does its own matting. On a smaller screen, you focus on more information than you would in an IMAX theater, this is where compositions may look compromised because of too much information being shown. |

I don’t think most people realize the actual IMAX ratio is 1.90:1 which would still have black bars on 16:9 displays. IMAX just allows the framing to be altered to 1.78 so the shifting aspect ratio goes from widescreen to “filling a display” like in theaters.
After seeing Transformers: The Last Knight, I’m more of an advocate for fixed aspect ratios. Sure, if the movie was filmed with IMAX cameras and not just composed for the 1.90 frame, then I might be persuaded to support shifting ratios. But many of these “opened” or “26% more picture” presentations are marketing gimmicks. Beauty and the Beast 2017 rarely takes advantage of the 1.90 frame. The only films I’ve seen where that expanded frame really helps are the Guardians of the Galaxy films. I honestly don’t miss it in any other Marvel film. |
