Warner Bros Brewster McCloud (1970) coming from WAC

Disc Configuration BD 50

Brewster McCloud (Bud Cort) lives deep within the cavernous underground of the Houston Astrodome, but his dreams rise much higher. He aims to fly. Not in a plane. But with strapped-on wings he’s designing – encouraged by a mysterious woman (Sally Kellerman) who may be his guardian angel.

But Brewster McCloud, Robert Altman’s wild, anarchic cult fave, isn’t about dreams as much as it is about the highs and lows of humanity. It’s a serial-killer mystery. A frenetic car-chase flick. A crazy circus-finale comedy. Shelley Duvall debuts as the tour guide whose seduction of Brewster may lead to his undoing. Ah, love. The thing that at once shapes and unravels us. The thing that may or may not give us wings.

I love how Leonard Cohen gave his songs to Altman for McCabe & Mrs. Miller because he loved Brewster McCloud and here I am prepping for a blind buy cause I have (sadly) never seen this.

If you like Altman, Cort, and or eccentric things in general, this should be safe. But it is on the odd side, so likely not for mainstream tastes. Personally, I love it.

I actually think the full story is cooler -- everybody told Cohen "You have to let him do this, he's the guy who made M*A*S*H." But Cohen didn't like M*A*S*H, and was going to pass, until he found out that Altman had also made Brewster McCloud, so it became an immediate yes.

It's a very strange movie, but a very good one. I think it's my favorite Rene Auberjonois role in any Altman movie.

One of my favorite Altman films, can't wait to get it. Now if only Criterion could give us some info on their rumored California Split disc.

California Split is the last of the Altman films that I TRULY NEED on Blu ray. But, this is pretty cool too. Haven't seen Brewster McCloud in a long time but I know people that are obsessed with it.

'Brewster McCloud' will be a very welcome addition to my collection. I hadn't heard anything about a possible Criterion release of 'California Split', but that would be great if it happens. It's one of my favourite Altman films.

I haven't seen the film in its entirety, but a few months ago I caught the last 10-15 minutes on TV
[Show spoiler]where he's flying around the Astrodome
and if the rest of the film is as gloriously effed-up as that, I can't wait to watch it.

Honestly, as far as I remember, the climax is less effed-up than the middle. You might've spoiled the joke of Rene Auberjonois's character, but you haven't even seen Michael Murphy yet! (He plays a detective named Shaft.)

Another Altman classic...

Couldn't have said it better. Everyone seems eccentric here if I remember from my one viewing back in college days.

Is that cover picture Sgt Pepper redux?

Cannot wait for this upgrade! Altman is a top tier favorite and I want them all to eventually reach Blu but this was in the top few left for me (California Split is tops easily but A Wedding and the internationally panned Quintet are way up there on my list as well.)

Amazon is now showing my preorder as having a release date of November 13th. Another title delayed due to the disc manufacturing bottleneck? Not a huge deal, just hadn’t seen any other notification of the release date being moved.
