That's funny, I just watched this the other night with the hdr on on my system and it looked insane. Thought it was weird, as every other Paramount Blu I tried it on looked horrendous. I'm watching it this way from now on, until this comes anyway.

WoK was also the only one of the first six to get a proper restoration (4k all the way through to the finished master unless I’m mistaken) for the initial bd release nearly a decade ago, and they still ended up restoring it from scratch yet again for the director’s cut in 2016.
I think the reason it got so much tender love and care the first time around, and why they might release it on UHD before waiting until all six are ready (argh!), is that it’s always been the most highly regarded Trek film. All I can say is that I want them all and will patiently wait for the complete set if they decide to release this on its own first. The other five, and 3/4 of the TNG films are in dire need of remastering on regular bd anyways. |

It was a remaster of exisitng elements, which are all in good condition and not dug up rotting reels of film from a forgotten warehouse. Heck, Star Trek: The Next Generation had pristine raw VFX elements at their disposal - like Spacedock, Regula One, or the Mutara Nebula. The only "restoration" would be color correction, dustbusting and scratch repair which is normal for any film of that era. For them to call it a "full restoration" is misleading (and I've said this on many other threads). Unfortunately the term is thrown around so casually now it's meaningless marketing speak. Real restorations like The Godfather, My Fair Lady, Spartacus, Ben-Hur, Lawrence...etc. are truly special. |

I could’ve sworn there was a quote from someone back in ‘09 that the negatives for Khan were in danger or something to that effect.
Either way, if the ‘09 job was merely a remastering it was still way better treatment than the other five films recieved. |

I'd love to see a remaster of all the trek films. I am not a fan of the first (I started watching it when it was on TV, got bored), but I'd want 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Generations, First Contact and Nemesis.
Ive actually warmed to 3 and 5, I never used to like them much, however compared to the modern stuff, 5 is like Shakespeare. |
