As much as I hate Toshiba and blame them, I blame Universal and Paramount even more.
This is unreal and completely pathetic.

the article doesn't say they Convinced Paramount/Universal...

it doesn't say that at all...

Sources are telling us that they may have gotten Paramount and Universal to delay making any Blu-ray announcements for a couple of months (until late March or early April)
"may have"....not that it is official...

Max on the insiders thread is saying he's pretty sure Universal slutted themselves out again for more cash.

It seems like Toshiba wants the two studios to stay with HD-DVD as long as Warner is still releasing titles on the format. It is a pretty crummy thing for Toshiba to do. In essence, they are hoping to hoodwink, unsuspecting customers into buying into a dead format.

Paramount and Universal would be just as guilty. It may be their way to get back at Warner, and try to sell remaining software inventory as well.

I said it before and will say it again. I will never pay full price for any Paramount and Universal releases until they hit bargain bin prices.

Though I had no respect for Toshiba since forever, I have now lost respect for Paramount and Universal.
It became clear what was going to happen and what needs to happen on January 4th when Warner Bothers cast their swing-vote.
The fact that those 2 hold-outs are going to stick with it makes me seriously question their ability to forecast for their own companies best interests and the interests of the entire industry.
This pisses me off so much.

I'd love to see where or how Toshiba makes any money off of this. More upconverting players for the masses I suppose, but it's not gonna make a lick of difference on the software side.

They can "convince" Paramount and Universal all they want ("please stay...pretty please stay"...), they're going to follow the money if it's to be made, and some sort of gentleman's agreement won't stop those studios from jumping ship.

Keep in mind that Bill also mentioned the possibility of those players not being restocked, either. If that's the case then once they're gone, they're gone.

Exactly.
If they DO have plans to go blu, then they are assisting in screwing over consumers willingly and knowingly.
If they do not have plans of going blu then they are idiots and we have been given false information.

Guys, this is no surprise, both uni and paramount need to liquidate too. This gives them a couple months while they put the blu plans in place.

I heard there's plenty of space next to the hundreds of Atari versions of E.T.

The best things come to those who wait. I believe that yes, both studios need to get rid of their HD stock. When that is gone, game on!

At this point I think that Toshiba is most interested in unloading existing inventory onto unknowing suckers. That will cut their losses somewhat.

For what its worth (and I think this has been pointed out in other posts) Bill only said that they are delaying any announcements, I understand that to mean Toshiba has asked/convinced them to not say anything until they are ready to start actually selling Blu-ray discs. That way they are all able to clear out what inventory they have and try to mitigate/recover as much of their investment in the format as they can before they shut the whole thing down.

Of course, as has been said countless times before, speculation means nothing until it is official (of course once its over what is there left to discuss?)

If they weren't, they'd at least have announced the A4 by now ...

Hey, if Paramount and Universal want to be remembered as the ones who stuck with the losing, embarassing format, so be it. It's quite clear now as to which studios have no desire to see a single format.

toshiba must have some sort of hold over paramount/universal to be able to achieve this. This coupled with the fact that they are slashing their hard prices justy smacks of desperation and will only prolong the inevitable. I don't disagree with those who purely blame universal/paramount for this.

any person who from now on (we can have some sympathy for those who until warner pulled out of hd dvd) who invests in buying a hd dvd player is very breave or more likely extremely stupid
