Default Ringu (1998) / Ringu Collection (1998-2000)

NEW US/CA TITLE: Ringu (Blu-ray)

Ringu Collection Blu-ray

The film that redefined the horror genre, launched the J-horror boom in the West and introduced a generation of moviegoers to a creepy, dark-haired girl called Sadako.

Description
In 1998, director Hideo Nakata (Dark Water) unleashed a chilling tale of technological terror on unsuspecting audiences, which redefined the horror genre, launched the J-horror boom in the West and introduced a generation of moviegoers to a creepy, dark-haired girl called Sadako. The film’s success spawned a slew of remakes, reimaginations and imitators, but none could quite boast the power of Nakata’s original masterpiece, which melded traditional Japanese folklore with contemporary anxieties about the spread of technology.

A group of teenage friends are found dead, their bodies grotesquely contorted, their faces twisted in terror. Reiko (Nanako Matsushima, When Marnie Was There), a journalist and the aunt of one of the victims, sets out to investigate the shocking phenomenon, and in the process uncovers a creepy urban legend about a supposedly cursed videotape, the contents of which causes anyone who views it to die within a week – unless they can persuade someone else to watch it, and, in so doing, pass on the curse…

Arrow Video is proud to present the genre-defining trilogy – Ringu, the film that started it all, plus Hideo Nakata’s chilling sequel, Ringu 2, and the haunting origin story, Ringu 0 – as well as the ‘lost’ original sequel, George Iida’s Spiral, gathered together in glorious high definition and supplemented by a wealth of archival and newly created bonus materials.

LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS

– Brand New 4K restoration of Ringu from the original camera negative, approved by director of photography Junichiro Hayashi
– High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentations
– Lossless Japanese DTS-HD master audio 5.1 and PCM 2.0 soundtracks

Oh yeah! I've held off on the UK set for this. Love these films. Do we have a release date in October for these?

Oh man, I should have waited before caving on the Region-B set. Not that it's a problem, I just prefer most things to be region-A friendly.

It is a cool set, glad it's getting a US release.

My exact feeling on this as well. Would prefer region A, but being region free, I already own this set!

But awesome to see it's making its US debut! Who owns the rights to this in the US? Is it with Paramount?!!

I thought Paramount had the rights. It's possible that Arrow also has made a deal with them?

Dreamworks. But those rights may have expired.

Who actually distributes Dreamworks films now? I thought it was Paramount, but it seems like it could be Universal? Really curious.

Doesn’t Paramount release Dreamworks’ stuff?

They did it to me again! First the Hellraiser Scarlet set, then with Donnie Darko and now the Ring films. From now on I'm going to have to assume that all Region B-locked sets will eventually get Region A counterparts

Hopefully will be part of the next BN 50% off sale. That plus a 20% off coupon would get me to blind buy the sequels.

I could've sworn that after they announced the UK version, they told someone on facebook that a US release would be happening at a later date.

I asked them via private message on Facebook maybe two months ago if this would get a US release and they pretty much told me no as they were only able to get the UK rights. Glad that wasn't the case.

Providing they were being truthful there, that suggests this may have been a very recent breakthrough, which could have something to do with Paramount. If they don't announce anything telling in the meantime, we'll have to see if their logo is on the final product.
