Hey, can someone let me know how StudioCanal typically handles their subtitles, as in do they generally force the French subtitles on the English track or can they be turned off?
I'm thinking off getting Mia et le Lion Blanc but would go for the Shout Factory release if the French subtitles are forced. |

The thing that’s super annoying about many SC discs is that they often have subtitles that extend to the black widescreen bars if you’re watching a film in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. It’s so distracting, they should be within the frame of the film.

It's super annoying when you have a masking system and then realize you are missing half of the subs. I had no idea some people could move their subs I just assumed they were part of the disc and not changeable. I'll have to give it a try.

Funny, I often move the subtitles INTO the bars, especially if the subs are very big.

2 of the 3 recent Nanni Moretti films that StudioCanal released had forced subtitles depending on whether the UK, France or Germany was selected in the start menus. Didn't buy the third Moretti 'Caro Diario' as it wasn't released in the UK so that may be different than the other two... Aside from that release, I've owned a lot of UK and France StudioCanal releases and no others have had forced subtitles from memory. Might be something they only do when the original rights are owned by another company and they are contractually required to force subtitles.
On the odd occasion I've bought a French blu-ray of a film and it has forced subtitles, I've returned it to Amazon. |

The Wicker Man Vice Squad Near Dark According to a blu-ray.com review, "Near Dark" has forced French subtitles. The other two are part of a similar series of StudioCanal digibooks, which is why I am hesitant. I think I'll just go for it and return if the subtitles are forced. |
