Default Memory: The Origins of Alien - November 5, 2019

Quote:
Memory reveals the chilling, untold origins of Ridley Scott’s cinematic masterpiece Alien, rooted in Greek and Egyptian mythologies, underground comics, parasitology, H.P. Lovecraft’s weird fiction, the art of Francis Bacon, and the symbiotic genius of Dan O’Bannon (writer), H.R. Giger (designer), and, of course, Ridley Scott. Discover a treasure trove of unreleased materials from the O’Bannon and Giger estates, including original story notes, rejected designs and storyboards, sketches and concept art, behind-the-scenes photographs and footage, and Dan O’Bannon’s never-before-seen, original 29-page script from 1971, titled ‘Memory’.

Frankly, I'm just surprised there's anything left to tell.

Good Lord.

There isn't really. Most of it is covered in the documentary included with Alien, a good chunk of the interviews and on set footage are straight from there too. The whole thing felt pretty pointless to me.

I'm interested, but I've heard mixed reviews on it, and it's too bad that apparently there is no contribution whatsoever from Scott or Weaver.

On the other hand, I would certainly recommend J.W. Rinzler's new book 'The Making of Alien'. Rinzler's chronicling of the original Star Wars trilogy was nothing less than definitive- and he's done it again here. The book is an essential purchase for anyone with more than a passing interest in this movie and franchise.

There is additional material which was included on a bonus DVD but omitted from the bluray box set. Not much, but the complete screen test footage is pretty essential.

Well, it's not a standard documentary on the making of so and so. If you saw the director's previous film on the shower sequence from."Psycho", its about analyzing an iconic sequence and how it was a product of the times.

I would be very suprised it would bring anything new to the table, and what the excellent 3 hour (!) The Beast Within documentary (wich is included on the blurays/dvds) by Charles de Lauzirika already did better.

I'd like to see this but it's certainly not anything I need to own. Maybe I can suggest my local library to carry it if it doesn't end up on Netflix.

Aliens and Alien 3 would seem more apt for docs but once again the ones in the Quadrilogy are pretty comprehensive.

I'd like to see Hill/Gilers scripts for aliens and alien 3.

There's some really cool unearthed nuggets revealed, such as an early prototype Alien script Dan O'Bannon wrote called "They Bite" and an actual rejected "oversized featherless chicken" version of the Chestburster finally unveiled in physical form, but a lot of it is a little more on the analytical/academic/scholar side.

Still worth a watch, though...especially for die-hard Alien fans.

Exactly what I've been trying to say when describing it to friends after watching it earlier tonight.

Not my best blind buy as I would have preferred more making of type stuff but still glad to have seen it.
