Default Titane (2021)

Deadline

Quote:

Neon has acquired North American rights to writer-director Julia Ducournau’s Titane, a new French film about, well, we’ll find out later. Titane‘s plot “is being kept under wraps,” Neon says, and casting has yet to be announced.

What is known is that the acquisition marks Neon’s second of a French film this year, following the distributor’s Cannes acquisition Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which won the festival’s best screenplay award and is considered likely to be an Oscar contender.

Titane is produced by Jean Christophe Reymond (Kazak Productions), and is Ducournau’s directorial follow-up to her 2016 horror film Raw, winner of Cannes’ FIPRESCI prize.

That was a rather long trailer that doesn’t give anything away, it looks quite good. That said, it also gives me major Refn vibes, so I wouldn’t be too shocked if the word coming out of Cannes is polarising.

I have bigger Noé and Aja vibes. And I don't think I care about an even more aestheticized, cleaner cut French New Extremity. Raw was already pretty unpleasant - and I'm not talking about the gore.

Honestly, the pitch makes it sound like a more EXTREEEEEME version of Claire Denis' Les Salauds (also starring Vincent Lindon).

Going by Twitter reactions (I know, I know), this is the film of the festival so far and an instant cult classic.

IndieWire: "One of the Wildest Films to Ever Screen at Cannes"

Edit: Metacritic

I got to see the trailer again - though for the first time in the theatre - when I went to The Card Counter. Looks even better on the big screen.

Oct. 1st can get here fast enough.

It is a good film. Imaginative in startling, haunting ways, which I like and admire. An improvement over Brandon's debut (which was decent in its own way). But honestly, it's one of the few films by which I was taken aback due to the violence.

I hate when people try to proclaim something of a cult classic before it’s out.

That being said, This sounds like something I’d enjoy!

I saw it on its first day of release in French cinemas. When I left the theatre I wasn't 100% convinced, probably because I didn't know what it was about at all and was still in a daze.

Reflecting on it the next day, I realised it was a great film, strong and uncompromising, definitely not for all tastes (I have to smile thinking about how many people will go to see it just because it won the Palme D'or, and will probably leave the theatre disgusted halfway through the screening).

Obviously David Cronenberg comes immediately to mind (Refn is rather a postmodern director who borrows a lot from others, taking him as a model seems excessive), but also Tetsuo and in general a certain oriental narrative that rejects any rationality and realism in favour of a poetics of the macabre and corporality taken to the extreme.

The director is intelligent and has clear ideas about what she wants to tell (her interviews are always very interesting in this sense).

A film that certainly leaves its mark, and very original despite the clear inspirations from other authors.

Nah, it was an older trailer, didn't even mention it winning the Palm d'Or

Her interviews are amazing! I couldn't get enough of her. I am intrigued to see what the US press tour will look like and how she answers the nonsensical questions that the US entertainment press asks.
