They need to keep the franchise dollars coming in and this isn't a bad way to do it, the conversion should wipe the floor with the ones they did for the Deathly Hallows movies. If it does well I can see them converting the whole series, now if only we could get them on 3D Blu-ray...

From the article:
Quote:
Also as we noted yesterday, China’s theatrical re-opening will come in waves, the first being the re-release of older local titles.. Chinese exhibitors will keep 100% of the box office on those re-releases and have been encouraged to set attractive pricing...

We hear that other catalog titles such as the Avengers movies, Interstellar, Inception and more have also been discussed as possible re-releases in an effort to get moviegoers back in the mood for going to the cinema. Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone looks to be the first library pic confirmed.
The article doesn't make it clear, but if this is part of the re-release phase where the theaters keep all of the box-office, this is basically a "donation" of sorts on WB China's part.

WB likely had the 3D conversion already done, possibly done back when 3D was bigger and studios were doing conversions of catalog titles, but it wasn't released before the bottom dropped out of the 3D market. So this 3D conversion was just sitting on the shelf, similar to some of the unreleased Pixar 3D re-renders, like The Incredibles. Using the existing 3D conversion gives this re-release a bit of an extra incentive for viewers to come see it, and is no extra cost to WB.

This is great news. Hope they get Chris Parks (Fantastic Beasts/Gravity/Edge of Tomorrow) to supervise!

Well I'm glad I held off on get the UHD set lol. I would much rather rewatch these in 3D (possibly) than in HDR.

Maybe this will entice Disney to dust off those Star Wars prequel conversions and/or convert the original trilogy.

It’s 4K/3D, this would be the only reason for me to eventually get a 8k tv, if they brought back 3D. Otherwise no point in upgrading unless you can fit a 120” tv in your living room.

A 2K 3D Blu-ray would be a sufficient upgrade for me, I couldn't care less about any 4K/UHD edition...

Chamber of Secrets has dozens of scenes that are ripe for 3D conversion - that's the one I would want over the first movie.

Although some will say “it’s too dark to make the most of 3D”, the Prisoner of Azkaban is the most visually interesting movie and best suited to 3D imo.

Order of the Phoenix is my favourite, though having just read The Philosopher’s Stone with my 6 year old I really am quite excited to see this in 3D

Even if there’s a China-only BD3D with no English audio - I won’t care, I’ll remux the DTS:X audio from the 4K disc.

Well, WB was considering re-release of this film in mainland China market from early last year, so it's not just because the coronavirus situation and 3D conversion was possibly done during that time rather than already have a 3D done years ago.

As for the 4K thing, I believe it's just that 4K version used for UHD release, got 3D conversion, but will be showing in 2K/3D format. At least that would be a true 4K restoration, rather than those "4K restoration" re-releases of The Legend of 1900 and Life Is Beautiful we had last year, which they just used the old transfer and upconvert to 4K and make the 4K DCP out of it.

I've found no evidence they were ever actually released over there. I just want a 3D box set! To whom do we write?

Just use the auto conversion setting on a properly equipped 3D display...the result is likely to be better than the China conversion.
