For me this would be a quintuple-dip (?) but it's one of those titles I'll keep re-buying for upgraded presentation. One of my all-time favs.

The DTS 6.1 mix was insane on the previous release. The Atmos should be a sub killer

Welp, time to finally get a 4K player and TV. If there's ANY movie that warrants upgrading to higher picture quality, lol.

I've yet to buy this classic, so I'll have to wait out screen captures on this 4K remaster to compare with the original. The few remastered Blu-rays I've seen in person I've not been a big fan of, e.g. First Blood and The Matrix. The contrast and highlights always seen to get way blown out during the 4K HDR to SDR conversion. Not sure if this is the case with all remastered Blu-rays in 4K releases, but it's been my experience with the two titles above.

Here's a few extremely crude comparison pictures I took from the First Blood 2011 release and the remastered Blu-ray from the 4K release.

Here's hoping the Top Gun 4K remastered Blu-ray is handled with a little more care.

Because the studio isn't doing the conversion properly and is just throwing the movie on bluray. This seems to happen when there's a 4K release. All the effort goes there and the studio just presses the automatic transfer button for the bluray.

Wouldn't get my hopes up for Top Gun. Paramount did exactly that with Beverly Hills Cop.

I prefer if we could get the 3D version converted to 2D and release that. It looks way better than whatever Paramount did here. I have a couple caps and viewing them on my tv, it's much sharper and grainy. Beautiful grainy.

Don't know why they couldn't replicate that.

I am not sure i like the new color timing. Seems they drenched it in the piss yellow filter that were so prevalent a few years ago, like they did on TGTBATU although not as heavy, but to me still enough to ruin Scotts visuals for me. They upped the brightness too,so the interior of the bridge is not as dark and flooded in red light, one can debate wether or not this is accurate lighting, but it is NOT like the movie i know so well and love, the cockpit scenes now look washed out and not as vibrant due to the sepia color grading now used.
And the Atmos track is not as dynamic as the old DTS 6.1 HDMA track, the low end in particular has taken a hit.

The only upside is no sign of EE or DNR,but this is irrelevant to me if the film doesnt look like it should,to me at least.

Another remaster i was really looking forward to,but is ultimately a revisionist changed film

The grading is faithful to the look Tony Scott intended

Yeah, because he is alive to tell them how it should look? No,this is someone who THINK they know what Tony would have had it look like.. If Scott wanted it to look like this,he would have graded it like this, simple as that.

It should have been the version submitted to National Film Registry in 2015 IE,the 30th anniversay master.

And i dont care for 30 years after revisionist tinkering,it is NOT how the film looked, and it shouldnt be changed.

One of the last things Scott did before he died was approve an older 4K master that this new transfer used as a reference for the colour correction. So yes, he was in fact alive to tell them how it should look.
