Very weird. I got an email from Zavvi U.S. this morning advertising this but it's a dead link that still hasn't been fixed, so I just gave up and ordered it for import from Zavvi UK. I don't really need it because I have the recent U.S. Steelbook but...well, you know...tat.

Is it really necessary to have ratings in this day and age?

Most other countries don't have them, and you can see all the violence, sex and bad language on the internet anyway. Nine year old kids use YouTube now.

At the very least just keep on the back, but leave the front and sides clear.

I never looked at the because as you say, I think it's a minority that uses them. But Brits have always been super conservative, in fact I always avoided UK releases as they were those most likely to have cut versions of movies.
The Germans are even more strict as by law must print that uglier bigger FSK logo everywhere, but luckily they found a way around it by doing Wendecovers (double-sided artwork) and often sticker-removable logos, but I think those must be for international releases because if it's law, then a sticker being removable would not be allowed.
Anyway, glad that the situations where you're forced to live with it are are fewer now.
But I think that the Clueless color palette of this edition leaves a lot to be desired and the ratings logo are just an added pain.
