Default Can Blu-Ray and DVD discs still get scratched even while they are in the case?

I’ve noticed a couple of my Blu-Ray’s seem to have some light scratches on them even if I’ve never actually used them. It’s nothing that I think would stop them from playing properly, but it’s something I’m confused by. Is it possible they are somehow getting scratched even while inside their cases? If so, what can I do to keep stuff like this from happening?

No, but they can be scratched by the machine that puts them in the case.

They can and will receive minor blemishes if they come loose and "float" inside the case. All that bouncing around will cause some minor superficial damage. Sitting on a hub as intended however should make it nearly impossible to damage them without assistance.

And that’s the thing: they aren’t even loose in the case! They are sitting perfectly stable in the disc hubs!

I'd say they can definitely be scratched inside a case if there is some kind of debris on the disc or in the case when you store it. Unless the disc holder is really tight, these things spin around in there any time you move them so it's not entirely infeasible for it to happen.

If it is one of those really cheap cases, with the big holes in them, then I would try and switch it out to a thicker case. Also, gently turn the movie up and down before you buy them if you are buying in stores. If you hear a floater, skip it and grab another one.

Even if the disc isn't a floater, it is possible to compress a case enough to scratch a disc that remains on the spindle without damaging the case or insert.
