Default Upgrading to 4K in 2021 advice please

Hello, I'm strongly considering upgrading to 4K in the new year after being blown away by what I've seen. I love physical media but Im also very aware of how its struggling. I have noticed that Amazon have 5 4Ks up for preorder and that hasn't changed in quite some time.

Im not tech or news savvy, is there something I'm missing here? Is 4K alive and kicking? That seems like a VERY low amount of new releases.

Is it worth buying a new tv and player for at this point? I'm very happy with blu ray and have recently hit 1000 films.

Just looking for some advise, tips or help. Mods, if this thread is in the wrong place please lock/move/delete.

Thank you.

What do you mean Amazon have five pre-orders up?

If you need any indication of how "alive" or otherwise 4K UHD is this is a small selection of what has released in just the last two months:

Game of Thrones - All Eight Seasons
Chernobyl HBO Mini Series
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Hobbit Trilogy
Total Recall
Parasite
Tremors
Tenet

And then extending it further to this year:

Star Wars - All 11 films
All the Daniel Craig Bond films
Home Alone
Jaws

And I'm sure I've probably missed some other notable releases. Considering there are very few new movies coming out currently, it's not bad IMO.

a 50 inch Samsung. It looks as good as 1080 I've ever seen but a friend of mine got an Oled and it was incredible. I don't watch TV at all so if i was going 4K it would be for disc only, so its a new TV and player id be needing. i was just curious what the future holds for 4K (there have been unbelievable 4K releases up until now)

There was leaked info earlier in the year that Army of Darkness is getting a 4K disc release.

And remember a 4K player will upscale blu-ray as well, so often your blu-rays will look better on a 4K TV.

Thats another good point! Thank you. I was just curious if the format was OK, thats all. I don't read technology websites or anything so I thought Id ask here. Which i regretted immediately.

What about playing 4k discs on a non-4K television?

Will they look good, even if you’re not getting 4K resolution?

Why don't you try it? What player do you have now? If you purchase a 4K player it would still play your SDR blu rays. Buy a 4K movie, they always come with a 1080p disc, and see how it looks.

I don’t yet own a 4K player.

My current player feels like it’s on its last leg...making a bad noise the last few nights. So when I buy a new one, it might as well be 4k, as I’ve been buying a lot of 4K releases the past couple years.

But I don’t know when I’ll be willing to spend the dough on a good 4K tv to go with it.

From reading your post, it seems your closer to buying a new 4K disc player than you are to a new TV purchase. When you purchase your new player and connect to your 1080p TV, see what the 4K disc looks like on it. It would probably look well downconverted.

If you can afford a 65 inch OLED then consider it. If you can't, I'd suggest waiting.

4K isn't that much better than blu-ray. There are some films where you may even be wondering if you put in the bluray disc or the 4K disk as long as you have a high end TV.

The quality of the TV matters more than the format. I'd take 1080P movies on OLED over 4K HDR on LED all day long.

If you can't get the large OLED (don't bother with a 50-55 inch) then consider just buying 4K releases if they go on deep discounts and wait til you can get the right TV and player.

You will go 4K evenutally, but going in at the bottom tier would be a mistake and not worth your money. IMO.

If you're satisfied with standard blu-ray and already have 1,000 movies, then 4K shouldn't be in such a rush, then you're going to start buying more movies while your blu-ray collection is will not be watched.

I don't know about that, I have way more standard Blu Rays than I do UHD, I suspect most people do. I find myself watching way more SDR content than I do UHD simply because it's more plentiful. So the key here is to buy a UHD display that's great with SDR content and UHD so you can have the best of both worlds.

If you are an avid gamer, you might want to wait until next year's new models, where more of them will HDMI 2.1. If not, what are you waiting for?
