Default Bad Boy Bubby - Beyond Genres No. 7

Bad Boy Bubby Blu-ray

Out February 17th from Umbrella Entertainment
https://www.umbrellaent.com.au/movie...nd-genres.html

I love the artwork, but the title is an odd choice to revive 'Beyond Genres', especially since Umbrella now has two sub-labels dedicated to Australian cinema.

I'd say Bad Boy Bubby fits perfectly within the Beyond Genres line. It's extremely weird and absurd while also being touching. It screams Beyond Genres to me

Sunburnt Screens feels like it is the home for more of the classic Australian "serious" cinema (as opposed to the Ocker comedy, horror and action films) i.e. the stuff we made culturally to show we can make arthouse fare as good as anyone else in the world can. That's not a knock by the way, I really enjoy alot of the Australian new wave.

That's a fair point. It is indeed a weird film. I think the setting of regular old Adelaide stands out against the notion of "Worlds On Film", but I suppose of Bubby's point-of-view it's practically an alien landscape.

This is just a re-release from the looks of it.

Good news! I thought the extras looked the same, but no, I see there's a Q&A not on the first edition. Couldn't find any info about it being a new transfer though. The original release certainly could've looked better.

They also started the line with the restored Razorback. Which did bother me a bit at the time, but in hindsight, it does seem to not quite fit in with the other Ozploitation line titles, due to a much higher budget and production quality.

At the end of the day, as long as I get the title I don't mind. My Beyond Genres collection currently consists solely of Razorback and Spirits of the Air, and soon Bad Boy Bubby, so to me it's really just a third Australian cinema line, so the odd one out genre titles.

I think Razorback fits Beyond Genres well due to the film's visual style, which at times feels other-worldly.

Spirits of the Air alone justifies creating the sub-label. That film is out there!

Exactly, Razorback is so incredibly stylized in the way it's shot, and also with its Iva Davies score that even if it's still a monster movie about a giant boar, it's stylistically a head and shoulders above anything else in the Ozploitation line.

My copy of Spirits of the Air only arrived a few days ago after sleeping on it too long and it going out of print, but I loved Dark City and The Crow so keen to see where that all started.

Umbrella's 4k transfer is from an Aussie 35mm release print, whereas Blue Underground's HD master was sourced from an IP. I'm not sure if Umbrella's audio is the same as Blue Underground's crazy remixes, but it's possible Umbrella did their own 5.1 remix if they had access to the master tracks and recording stems.

Another example of this is Body Melt. Umbrella's BD was based on a 4k scan/resto of a 35mm release print, though the 5.1 audio is a completely new mix using master recording elements (there was a feature on the disc that had films director Philip Brophy saying he was wanting to do a new proper one for a while, as he claimed the Dolby Surround mix was poorly done by the Aussie theatrical distributor).

Vinegar Syndrome located the 16mm A/B negatives in Canada, and did their own 4k transfer that was used on their Blu and the UK 88 Films one. Vinegar Syndrome also located the original Dolby Stereo LRCS mix and wanted to use it, but Brophy didn't approve it and preferred them to use the 5.1 remix as that was to his liking.

Hi

Some info on the source of the master was announced last month, and it is not from a release print - not sure where you got that info from.

i might be in the minority but I actually don't mind Umbrella using prints and scanning them as when watching a low budget cult film it adds to the experience imo.

It seems like a lot of effort for another label to come alone and find and use the material that should have been used in the first place, like with Body Melt and Road Games.

It might be the case that Umbrella simply couldn't locate or access those materials, but I do wish they'd be more forthcoming about what materials were used for restorations. They did with Road Games, but I don't remember any mention prior to release of this or Body Melt back in the day being from prints.

I can confirm that Umbrella’s edition of Body Melt was not sourced from a print, but rather the interpositive, as confirmed by Simon Sherry via a PM at the time of the disc’s release.

Checking on the system, the actual aspect ratio for the BD, it's 1.77:1, which was taken from an interpos of the film.

Is this worth upgrading if you own the Eureka Entertainment Blu-Ray?

Judging from previous Beyond Genres releases, then it is probably for good. If not, then good to consider JB HiFi and Sanity, since it's still in stock on both of their websites
