I imagine some of the concern is because some stores like Best Buy, will sometimes in the past, give you a receipt with a pre-order code on it when your game finally arrives. And then with that receipt, you log in and enter it to get your bonus pre order item.
Lots of stores in the past would offer physical trinkets as pre order gifts, like when EB Games gave away tons of Star Wars Biker Scout action figures in special packaging for Star Wars Battlefront 1 on PS2 way back then. But I remember the first digital bonus items made me wonder what the point was when they said for Fallout New Vegas, pre-order and get a special set of weapons and clothing depending on which store you pre-ordered from. Was it really special in that game? Not at all. It was mostly just junk gear and weapons you could craft or find later on pretty much. Nothing of real value, just a very slight advantage IMO. These days, pre-order digital items are pretty much the standard. Some are cool, but most are just cosmetically different gear. Like a gold handgun in a game. Physical pre-order items are rare, like the physical disc game for Alex Kidd DX this year included an actual video game manual similar to the old style, and a tiny key chain trinket, and reversible packaging. Honestly, having a digital games only PS5 without a disc drive is fine IMO, and it's unlikely to miss out on anything other than some rare pre-order trinkets here and there. One huge advantage of digital games? Instantly load them without having to hunt through a ton of disc cases to find the game you're looking for. The disadvantage being if anything messes up the file for some rare reason, and the file is lost, the whole game would need to be re-downloaded if the PS Store is still active in 20 years time for that game. But if you have a disc, just insert it and start a new game in most cases. Except for cases where an update is absolutely required to play the game, like with Mass Effect Andromeda, which was a broken POS on the disc. And Cyberpunk 2077, which is a broken POS on the disc. And Fallout New Vegas, which has a bug glitch that crashes the game every time you try to exit the casino, and too many other broken, unfinished games that are being put onto discs these days sadly before being fully playable. ![]() |
